CMJ 2012 was such a great experience for me.  I was fortunate enough to host a CMJ-themed episode for MTV’s Weird Vibes.  This meant that I got to skip lines, check out a ton of live music, hang out with the rich and fabulous and interview bands.  If there was ever a gig I was born to do, this is it!  You’ll be hearing more and seeing the episode very soon and of course, I will let you know all the details.   But for now, I want to hip you to some singers and bands you might not be familiar with.

This post is about Kitty Pryde!  Kitty Pryde is a rapper who first took the internet by storm and now the music industry is taking note!  Kitty’s rap’s are hilarious.  Here’s a sample lyric if you don’t believe me ( “I spilled a little of your blood, I kind of want to lick it up. But I guess that wouldn’t be vegan, so let’s just drive around and listen to some Sara and Tegan. You don’t even know me this is only a dream, and I’m just thinking of your eyes, nothing to do with your semen.”)  When I met Kitty Pryde we were both pretty exhausted from our respective busy CMJ schedules.  She was very cool and answered my long list of questions and even posed with me where she showed off her inside the lip tattoo that says “Prince$$.”  Pretty awesome, according2g!  Good luck to you Kitty!

This post is about Scottish electronic music composer Oliver Sabin aka Unicorn Kid.  As of this writing, Unicorn Kid has just turned 21 years old!  He started making music at age 15 and by age 16 was remixing Pet Shop Boys (for their single “Did You See Me Coming”)!  We talked a bit about Pet Shop Boys as they are one of my favorite groups and Unicorn Kid talked about being involved in a scandal when the press reported how much he made for the remix! The future is very bright for Unicorn Kid and I am very excited to hear more great things from him!  Thanks again for being very cool to talk to!

This post is about DIIV.  Formerly known as “Dive,” the quartet from Brooklyn is an indie rock/dream pop/shoe gaze band.  If none of that makes sense to you, think of a smooth, psychedelic rock sound with trippy and mellow vocals.  DIIV has a hug e buzz around them and they were one of the most talked about bands at CMJ.  I caught the tail end of their set – like literally the last note, so I had to discover their music on my own.  I am really liking their album “Oshin” and I recommend it to you!

DIIV was super cool to chat with as I quizzed them about some of the various rockstars they’ve hung out with.  This experience made me realize – HOLY SHIT!  I’ve met a lot of people!  (And Universe, I am deeply grateful so  please bring me more great experiences!)

DIIV is on Twitter (their name is @lovealien) and so is According2g.com (@according2g).  FOLLOW US!

Thanks again DIIV for a great interview and for the great music!  I know you’re going to be HUGE!

CMJ – An Encounter with Pictureplane

I admit it!  The first time I saw Pictureplane perform, I wasn’t into it.  The sound in the venue was so loud that it basically made my ears bleed.  Coupled with the fact that he opened for Crystal Castles that night, whose shows are super rowdy (read: I am too old for that shit), the crowd was unruly from beginning to end.  Making matters worse, an enormous amount of baby powder was introduced into the crowd towards the end of the show (it was part of the performance) and I nearly passed out from it.  I pretty much wrote off Pictureplane from that moment.

Flash forward many months later and I got the opportunity to interview Travis Egedy aka Pictureplane for the CMJ episode of MTV’s Weird Vibes.  (Details on the episode to come soon, so stay tuned).  He was so cool to talk to and was great to interview.  He has a great sense of humor and after running into him several more times at CMJ, I am happy to report, instead of punching my lights out, he was always super friendly towards me.  🙂

I turned a new leaf and decided to check out his album “Thee Physical” and I am happy to report – I am a fan!  I definitely blame the sound in the venue for making everything sound so distorted because the album is a total fun dance party from start to finish.   To think I would have missed out on a lot of good music because of that night is distressing, but better late than never, I always say.  Check out Pictureplane’s Soundcloud page as there are a ton of free remixes!  I hope you become a fan!  Thanks again Pictureplane!

Encounters at CMJ – Mac Demarco

Mac Demarco is a singer/songwriter from Canada.  His music finds him crooning in falsetto or singing in a very deep voice.  Rather than be your typical singer/songwriter where all tracks sound like they are from the same family, Mac’s songs are filled with hooks that will lure you in on first listen.  In 2012, Mac Demarco released the “Rock and Roll Nightclub EP” as well as his first proper full length album “2.”  I have to say, I am liking them a lot.  The music world is taking note too.  During CMJ, Mac Demarco was one of the most buzzed about artists and he played 9 shows in 4 days!  Despite having such a crazy schedule, he was really cool to talk to.

I don’t want to spoil the interview for when you see it (because it was pretty epic!), but let’s just say that I brought him a pumpkin, we smoked a cig together and Mac Demarco took my on screen kissing viriginity from me.  Sorry fellas, he’s straight!  That’s what’s up!   Mac Demarco is in his early 20s and if he’s this good being this young, the future is incredibly bright for him.  I will definitely be following his career and I recommend you do the same!

Thanks again Mac for being awesome all around!
