A dream of mine came true yesterday at the CMJ music marathon in New York as I had the opportunity to interview Interpol’s lead singer Paul Banks for MTV’s show “Weird Vibes.”  (Air dates and links will be posted as soon as I know, so stay tuned to the site and tell all your friends).  Paul Banks is taking a brief break from Interpol and will be releasing a solo album called “Banks” on October 23, 2012.  Long time readers of the site know I am a huge fan of Interpol so this was a huge thrill for me (and it was my first ever on-camera rock star interview.  Not too shabby)!  Before the interview, Paul performed a 30 minute set that included tracks from “Banks” including “The Base” and “Summertime Is Coming”  and also “Games For Days” from his Julian Plenti solo album.

I asked Paul important questions such as  his feelings on the fact that my world exclusive live video of “Not Even Jail” that I posted on failed to go viral.  It made absolutely no difference to him at all, moments before denying the site access to exclusive mp3s.  Ha!  We also talked about hanging with rockstars and he revealed he’s good friends with Britt Daniel of Spoon.  He never got to meet Amy Winehouse and though he hasn’t met Gotye, he likes “Somebody That I Used To Know.”   He did reveal that once touring commitments and promotion are completed for “Banks” he will get back with Interpol and they will record again.  Thanks again to Paul Banks for being such a good sport and also to MTV for this great experience.  And also, thanks for the photo op!  “Banks” by Paul Banks is out on October 23, 2012.  Get it!!!

Weird Vibes

Exciting news!  I’ll be hosting an episode MTV’s web series “Weird Vibes” for their upcoming CMJ edition.  CMJ is a yearly music festival that takes place in New York in mid-October.  Hundreds of bands at hundreds of venues will perform throughout New York from October 16 – 21, 2012.  It’s going to be exhausting, but as you know from reading this site daily (and I thank you for your patronage), I can handle it!   It’s going to be a great time and a great experience and I am looking forward to this very much.  As more details become available, I will let you know.  Thanks to MTV for this awesome opportunity!

Chris Glover of Penguin Prison

The day has come!   October 18, 2011 was an exciting day for New York’s dance/pop group Penguin Prison.  Their long awaited self-titled debut album was released in the United States and they celebrated by performing a showcase at Dominion in Manhattan as part of the CMJ Music Festival.  If you are unfamiliar with Penguin Prison’s music, here’s a few things you need to know:  1. Every song is ridiculously catchy.  2. Lead singer Chris Glover is a multi-instrumentalist and his falsetto will make you become an instant fan.  3. Penguin Prison are great in concert.  As you are all aware, I see hundreds of bands each year and Penguin Prison are one of the few groups that keep me coming back for more and in addition, I always have a great time at their concerts!  With each Penguin Prison show I’ve seen, I really love watching the audience react to the songs.  I am starting to see more crowd sing-a-longs as fans are getting more familiar with the music, but one thing never changes – a Penguin Prison show is a non-stop dance party.  Before the end of their 40 minute set, Chris Glover jumped into the audience and played guitar behind his head!  The infectiously catchy new single “Don’t Fuck With My Money,” got thunderous applause and other crowd favorites included “In the Way,” “Golden Train,” “Fair Warning” and the show’s final song “Multi-Millionaire.”  Based on the crowd reaction at each show, I can say with great certainty that Penguin Prison is going to be huge and I am very excited for them.

"Penguin Prison" - Out Now!

Penguin Prison’s debut album is out now!  Get it and spread the word!

See the set list after the jump.

One of the industry darlings at the CMJ music festival in New York was The Drums.  I have to concur with all the positive buzz!  Lead singer Jonathan Pierce has a fantastic stage presence which cannot be described in words and pictures.  You’ll get the idea from a video of “Best Friend” live from Webster Hall on October 20, 2010, methinks.
