Happy birthday to artist and singer Cody Critcheloe from the group Ssion (prounced “Shun”).  If you don’t know Ssion’s music, you are totally missing out.  On record, their music is a non stop dance party and when they perform live, you’ll be wowed by the visuals and it’s like watching an art installation come to life.  Their 2011 album “Bent” made my top albums of the year list and I can’t wait to see what Ssion comes up with next.  Get to know today’s birthday boy and spread the word!  Happy birthday Cody! x

Good news Ssion fans!  “Bent,” one of my favorite albums of 2011 will see a physical release on August 7, 2012 (including some re-worked tracks by Grimes and MNDR).  Until then, here’s a free remix of Ssion’s “My Love Grows in the Dark” remixed by Nightfeelings.  Enjoy!

Lights, projections, drag queens, back up dancers and great dance music.  That’s one way to describe an amazing performance by Ssion (pronounced “shun”) at the Highline Ballroom in New York in the wee hours of the morning on March 3, 2012.  Hitting the stage around 3 am (yowsah!), Cody Critcheloe of Ssion wasted no time getting the crowd revved up with his classic song “Fear Us.”  Ssion originated in Kansas City and has been enjoying a growing following in New York and rightfully so.  2011 saw the performance art dance band Ssion performing a series of fantastic and critically acclaimed shows at PS1 as well as the release of the for a limited time only free download of the album “Bent,” a record which made my top 11 albums list of 2011.  The record (and this morning’s performance) have great songs that will take your mind on a journey from club thumpers such as “Listen to the Grrrls” “Blonde With U,” and “Psy-chic” to the after-hours chill out songs “Growin'” “Feelz Good (4-Ever)” and “My Love Grows in the Dark.”

Ssion’s performance is not just filled with great songs for the ears and feet, but it’s also a treat visually.  Performed in front of screens showing extremely trippy visuals, Ssion’s show also included choreographed dance moves executed by male dancers, whose bodies looked like statues.  Even at a very late hour, the crowd danced for the entire hour long set which also included a cover of Hole’s “Credit in the Straight World” and a bit of Prince’s Madonna’s “Keep It Together.”  Even though my body clock is off kilter today, I wouldn’t have missed this show for the world, and the next time Ssion play, you shouldn’t either!

Ssion had me at “we have a new album called ‘Bent’ coming out on June 28, 2011.”  The album is being released for free download on Ssion’s official website on Bent’s release day.  Ssion is part dance/punk band and part visual art.  Combining both mediums, a Ssion concert is a ridiculously good time.  Fun people in attendance, amazing visuals and dance music that reminds you how wonderful it is to be alive.  Lead singer Cody Critcheloe is a great performer and you’ll have a sweatty great time when you see him do his thing on stage.  You can hear their new single “Psy-chic” right now on Ssion.com.  Make sure you get your speakers ready, get the strobe lights out and prepare to party!  If you like what you hear, and I think you will, spread the word.

Ssion!  If you don’t know this dance/punk performance art collective and band from Kansas City, you’d better put them on your radar immediately…  but only if you enjoy seeing a band that will keep you dancing all night while you watch extremely trippy visuals on the screens behind them as they perform tracks that are both funky and rockin’.  Lead by Cody Critcheloe, Ssion (pronounced “shun”) played the first of 3 nights at the Museum of Modern Art PS1 in Queens.  Ssion is previewing new tracks from their upcoming album “Bent,” which will be released in July, 2011.  Cody Critcheloe is a little bit Freddie Mercury, a little bit Jake Shears and a whole lot of entertaining!  He danced all night long, and had drag queens and cross dressers dancing on stage with him to make the evening more wild.  Perhaps best of all, Casey Spooner of Fisherspooner was a special guest and he welcomed the Spring to New York by wearing slightly more than a smile (see a picture after the jump).

The crowd was dressed to the nines and the museum was packed.  One thing was clear – everyone was there for one reason only: to have a great time.  This show is definitely a contender for one of the best shows I’ve seen in 2011.  It combined art and music perfectly and was fun from start to finish.  If you missed this show, it is a pity, but you have two more chances to catch Ssion at PS1.  They’ll be performing on May 14 and 15, 2011 and you can get tickets in the link above.  The show begins around 9 pm and I highly recommend you see it.

See more pictures after the jump including Casey Spooner wearing very little and the gratuitous armpit hair shot  of Cody(for my gays), the set list and a photo from my backstage encounter with Cody Critcheloe.
