You can see more images from The Mermaid Day Parade here and here!

After the jump, see proof that Lou Reed from the Velvet Underground is able to flex those muscles in his mouth and smiles!  There are some images that contain sea-nudity, so if you have a closed mind, do not read any further!

Chickens of the Sea. Killed by BP!

To celebrate the coming of summer, New Yorkers gathered in Coney Island for the annual Mermaid Day Parade.  I’ve lived in New York for four years and this is a must-attend event for me every year (except for last year when it rained).  The Mermaid Day Parade pays tribute to Coney Island’s Mardi Gras which ran from 1903 to 1954 and it’s quite a site to behold.  People of all ages, races and weight categories dress as their favorite sea creatures and for a few hours each year, everyone is beautiful.  The obvious theme of this year’s parade was a protest against the BP oil spill that recently happened.  The parades grand marshalls were singers Laurie Anderson and Lou Reed (of The Velvet Underground) and coming soon, I have proof that Lou Reed (aka Old Man Grumpus) does, in fact, smile!  You won’t want to miss that photo, so stay tuned.

I typically stand on the boardwalk and watch the parade go by, but this year I decided to mix it up and stand on 21st and Surf.  Wow!  Talk about being disorganized!  About every 5 minutes, the police came by to tell us not to stand in the street and to get on the sidewalk.  From the sidewalk you wouldn’t be able to see anything, so it was really amusing watching hundreds of people in unison disobeying the law (a sign of things to come worldwide, methinks)!  Many times, the police came by to tell us to move (for our safety) and escorted us into on-coming traffic! Our tax dollars pay for this kind of incompetence!  But enough about that, here’s some more pictures of the Mermaid Day Parade 2010.  Some images might not be safe for closed minded people, so be warned before you read on…

White Darth Vader and G

There will be many more images from the Mermaid Day Parade in Coney Island, New York coming soon… but for now, enjoy a sneak peak of what’s to come.  After the jump, see parade grand marshalls Laurie Anderson and Lou Reed (in shorts!), my encounter with a green man, and most importantly – boobies!  (that image is NSFCMP – not safe for closed minded people), so beware!

Hall and Oates – Live in Coney Island

It’s amazing what lengths people will go to for a free show.  Daryl Hall and John Oates, known more famously as Hall and Oates, did a free show tonight in New York’s Coney Island.  It seems that the most out of shape, and obnoxious New Yorkers came out to see this depression-friendly priced concert.  With that being said, I was determined to have a good time and I did.

I can’t recall the entire setlist as I am seriously in concert overload (but nevertheless, thanks universe, please give me some more!) but it went something like this…  If I am wrong, please feel free to correct me. You won’t hurt my feelings.

SETLIST UPDATE:

Maneater / Family Man / Out Of Touch / Say It Isn’t So / How Does it Feel to Be Back / Las Vegas Turnaround / It’s Uncanny / She’s Gne / One On One / Sara Smile / I Can’t Go For That / Rich Girl  / You Make My Dreams / Kiss On My List / Private Eyes

Daryl Hall must have been feeling the low energy of the crowd as he sat on a stool most of the night and wore sunglasses long after the sun went down.  Noticably absent from the set were “Adult Education,” “Method of Modern Love,” and “Possession Obsession,” but I am quite certain the crowd was never the wiser.

Say it isn't so!

It's better to be pissed off than pissed on.

It's better to be pissed off than pissed on.

Last summer, after it was announced that a lot of the cool stuff (like the amusement park and miniature golf course, to name two things) in Coney Island, New York was to be turned into condos and other useless corporate garbage, my friends and I took a trip so we could walk the board walk one last time, get heartburn from a greasy hot dog and of course, urinate on top of a sign that prohibits urination and take photos of it.  Ahhh.  Memories…
