CMJ is in full effect. The non-stop music marathon has begun in New York and because I tend to go see live music several nights a week, I decided not to kill myself by seeing everything CMJ has to offer. What I decided to do instead was to pick out a few of the bands that sounded the most interesting to me and go see them. Buzz band the Drums was one of my picks and I was very happy with the choice I made. On October 20, 2010, The New York band played a nice homecoming show by selling out Webster Hall. Their music is pop meets post punk and you can hear they’ve been influenced by Joy Division and The Smiths. Two fine bands to love, according2g. From the second they hit the stage, the Drums were on fire! Lead singer Jonathan Pierce was all over the stage – dancing, singing and sometimes performing on his tippie toes and still holding the note! Just as the Drums’ career started reaching buzz band status, one of their guitar players left the band, but that didn’t stop this band! Their new not-permanently-in-the-band-just-yet guitar player fit in quite nicely and highlights for me were the uptempo tracks “Don’t Be A Jerk, Jonny” and “Best Friend.” A video of “Best Friend” is coming soon, so stay tuned for that. I also met the band before the show and they were all so very cool. Pictures of that encounter will be coming soon as well so stick around.
Until then, enjoy some more pictures of The Drums and see the set list after the jump.
