Los Angeles!  Save the date.  On June 11, 2011 at the Corey Heford Gallery, a gala reception for Joshua Petker’s mini-exhibit entitled “Celluloid Constellations” will be taking place.  Joshua Petker is paying tribute to Hollywood legends such as Audrey Hepburn, Dorothy Dandridge, Veronica Lake and Fatty Arbuckle.  As always with his paintings, you have to expect the unexpected as Joshua is notorious for subtlety infusing vivid colors that take his subjects into another dimension.  Every time I look at his paintings, I find myself contemplating the back stories on the figures he’s painted.  In this exhibit, we already know the back stories on the subjects or at least we think we do.  When you examine these paintings, you’ll see a darker and more vulnerable side to these legendary beauties.

The Corey Helford Gallery is located at 8522 Washington Blvd. in Culver City.  The mini-exhibit “Celluloid Constellations” by Joshua Petker will be on view from June 11 – June 30, 2011.  The opening night reception is on June 11, 2011 at 6 PM, so I expect you to represent!  Joshua is a very cool guy, so please say hello him on opening night.  Tell him G sent ya!

For people that live outside of Los Angeles, I have a special treat – after the jump, see a few more images from “Celluloid Constellations” by Joshua Petker!

Los Angeles – before you go away for the holidays, make sure you stop by the Corey Helford Gallery and check out Sylvia Ji’s latest exhibition “Shapeshifter.”  Her works combine Native American mythology, folklore and motifs including shapeshifting – where a human acquires the ability to alter its physical appearance.  This is the second exhibit I’ve seen in person from Sylvia Ji and I really love her work.  In addition to the detail, the colors she uses are so great and each portrait has a back story that will definitely take your mind on a journey.

I was already in love with seeing Sylvia Ji’s work and when I headed upstairs, this New Yorker got a great surprise that a new work by one of my favorite artists Joshua Petker was hanging on the wall of the gallery!

Head Wound by Joshua Petker

The other day, I was a guest speaker at Pratt Institute.  I spoke about my life, my blog and the art I love.  One of the artists I mentioned in my lecture was Joshua Petker and in fact, in my blog post about giving the lecture, one of Petker’s works was up on the projection screen.  I’ve received several private messages wanting to know how to obtain works by this artist.  Good news!  Petker recently participated with 11 other artists at an exhibition at the Bristol Museum in England.  In association with the Corey Helford Gallery, The 12 Prints of Bristol are now available in limited editions of 150 (for each print), signed and numbered by the artist.  They are selling for a mere $175 and they are sure to sell out quick.  In addition to Joshua Petker, the other artists featured in this series are: Luke Chueh, Natalia Fabia, Sas Christian, Buff Monster, Sylvia Ji, Michael Mararian, Ron English, Eric Joyner, Gary Baseman and Shag.  Go to the official Corey Helford Gallery site and these prints can be yours!
