Nicholas Ashford

Nicholas Ashford

Today has been a horrible day for music!  First, news broke that songwriter Jerry Leiber (of the famous songwriting duo Leiber/Stoller) who wrote countless hits including “Hound Dog,” “Yakety Yak” and “Stand By Me” died.  Hours later, Nicholas Ashford, half of the singer/songwriting duo Ashford and Simpson has died at age 70 from complications from throat cancer.  Of course, Ashford and Simpson had the megahit “Solid” in the 1980s, but before that they wrote megahits such as “Ain’t No Mountain High Enough,” “I’m Every Woman” and “Reach out and Touch Somebody’s Hand.”   I met Ashford and Simpson in the 1990s just one time and they were both extremely cool.  My condolences go out to Valerie Simpson and their family.  RIP, Nicholas!  🙁

Jack LaLanne

Sad news!  Fitness guru Jack LaLanne has passed away at age 96.  I’ve met Jack LaLanne a few times and he was always a super nice guy.  He was full of energy and was such an inspiration to keep your body in good shape.  It obviously paid off for him as he lived to age 96.  You will be missed Jack!  Thanks for being a cool guy in this life!

JD Salinger Dies

Author of books such as The Catcher in the Rye and Nine Stories, JD Salinger has died.

The only personal experience I’ve had with Mr. Salinger was about 15 years ago when I’d obtained his home address and I wrote him a letter requesting his autograph.  I received a letter some weeks later saying “Please don’t EVER contact Mr. Salinger at his home.”

Rest in peace, just the same.

Say It Isn’t So!

Rumours abound.  Sites like our good friends at Dr. Funkenberry are reporting that Michael Jackson has passed away from cardiac arrest.  We hope this is not true!

The below photos are adverts for his “This Is It” shows at the O2 in London scheduled to begin next month and run through 2010.

This is it?

This is it?
