On August 26, 2010, The Killers lead singer Brandon Flowers made his live solo debut in New York playing a sold out show at the Highline Ballroom. The brief 45 minute set showcased his solo album “Flamingo,” and featured mostly new songs. For the encore, he treated the screaming crowd to an acoustic ’cover’ of the Killers classic “When You Were Young,” and as you will hear in this video, it was a sing-a-long that sent the crowd into the night with bliss oblivion.
Rumours of The Killers lead singer Brandon Flowers’ sexuality have been floating around since the beginning of his musical career. Â Sure, he’s Mormon. Â Sure, he has kids. Â In this day and age, that means nothing. Â I will love him no matter who he chooses to get down on his knees for. Â When I saw his New York live solo debut on August 26, 2010, I overheard lots of my gays in the audience saying things like “No straight guy loves the Pet Shop Boys as much as he does” and “He is such a bottom.” Â I don’t know if either of these things are true. Â However, covering Kim Carnes’ 1980s song “Bette Davis Eyes,” certainly doesn’t help his case for heterosexuality, but here at According2g, we love all people equally.

Matthew Vlahovich and Jake Palahuk of Young Empires.
It’s not very often when you don’t want to slash your wrists watching an opening band.  It’s even more rare when you fall in love with the opening act immediately.  It’s also uncommon when the band keeps you entertained throughout their set to the point where you don’t want them to ever stop playing. Such was the case when I saw Canadian electro group Young Empires open for Dragonette at New York’s Bowery Ballroom on August 13, 2010.  This was the first show the group has ever played in New York and based on the crowd reaction, you’d think they’d been around for years!  The crowd was dancing and grooving throughout the band’s 30 minute set.  Lead singer Matthew Vlahovich’s voice reminded me a bit of Kele from Bloc Party mixed with Trent Reznor and when you put that on top of some hard hitting dance music, I was in heaven!  I think this band has the potential to be huge and I am already a huge fan!

I couldn’t wait to meet the band so I could tell them each how awesome they were and they were all extremely nice guys. Â More on my encounter with them coming soon. Here’s a piece of wonderful news that lead singer Matthew Vlahovich told me – if you go to the band’s myspace page (link is above), by signing up on their email list, you can get 4 demos and 1 remix the band has done for free! Â I’ve already downloaded and I am loving their studio work as much as their performance! Â I wish them all the success in the world and I hope they make it quick so I can go see them live again.
As I mentioned previously, British indie-folk band Stornoway are poised to become a huge success.  I was lucky enough to meet most of the band after their debut performance in New York City (they played in Brooklyn a few nights ago) on July 8, 2010.  The band is both a treat for the ears and the eyes as you can see in these pictures.  They were all extremely nice and I am very grateful for our encounter!  Their debut album “Beachcombers Windowsill” will be out in the States soon, so keep a lookout for this band.  Also, if you go to their official site, you can download a free mp3 of “On The Rocks.”  Thanks again guys! Looking forward to seeing your names and faces all over the place!
