So many legends broke on through to the other side in 2010.  I was very fortunate to have met a lot of them when they were still here with us.  Thanks for the joy you’ve brought us all and we’ll be joining you soon!

Double Standard by Dennis Hopper

Dennis Hopper - Double Standard. Now showing at MOCA in Los Angeles through September 26, 2010.

Actor Dennis Hopper who passed away earlier this year was also a prolific artist.  For some reason it took his passing for his works to really make their way into the mainstream.  On my recent working/vacation to Los Angeles, I saw Hopper’s work in at least 3 exhibits, whereas prior to his death, I’d never seen any of his art in person!  Oh, that’s so LA!  The “Double Standard” exhibit at MOCA in downtown LA is curated by Julian Schnabel and it’s the first exhibit under new MOCA director Jeffrey Deitch.  You’d think those two factors would make this exhibit one that is not to be missed, but I left feeling like I could have just looked at the coffee table book that accompanies the exhibit and saved myself the $10 admission price.  The exhibit shows off dozens of black and white photos that Dennis Hopper took from the 1950s onwards and according2g, most of them were unremarkable.

What was impressive; however, was that Hopper made enormous paintings of some of these pictures.

The buzz on this exhibit was that it had been in the planning stages for several years, yet to me, it felt thrown together at the last minute.  You’ll have to see it for yourself to make up your mind but I will say I am glad I saw it.  Is that a double standard?  The exhibit runs until September 26, 2010 at MOCA in Downtown Los Angeles.
