Late last year, I hosted an episode of MTV’s “Weird Vibes” and I had the pleasure of interviewing Diiv.  At the time, I was not familiar with their music, but I’ve since gotten to know and love it.  Needless to say, I was super excited to see them perform at the Brooklyn Bowl on January 13, 2013 and as an added bonus, it was a free show!

If you don’t know Diiv’s music, it’s dreamy surf/psychedelic pop.  That genre is pretty popular at the moment but most bands do not pull it off well.  Diiv, on the other hand, sound great both on record and live.  They played the majority of their debut album “Oshin,” which made many critics’ best albums of 2012 list.  They used the live setting to play extended versions of their songs which featured long jamming sections that showed the band was obviously having a great time on stage getting lost in the music, and the audience reacted by returning the love.

They also performed a new track as well as a Madonna cover and lead singer Cole Smith wore the world’s largest sweater (which you can see more clearly below).  Diiv will be playing New York again at the end of January (literally January 31, 2013) opening for The Vaccines at Terminal 5, so if you missed them last night, make sure you go to that show because it’s going to be awesome!

Weird Vibes

Weird Vibes

As you all know, my life is filled with fun, excitement, art, rock & roll, celebrities and experiences that are at times too bizarre to be true, and yet, I have no reason to lie (plus I have proof).  That’s why I started carrying a camera around with me.   One of the most awesome things to happen to me in 2012 was getting a call from MTV Hive to host their CMJ-themed episode of “Weird Vibes!”  For the duration of the music festival, the uber-awesome producer of “Weird Vibes” Shirley Braha and I hit the hottest concerts in Manhattan and Brooklyn in search of buzz and vibes and we got it!

Over the course of the week, I was fortunate enough to interview Mac Demarco, DIIV, Paul Banks (Interpol), Unicorn Kid, Kitty Pryde, and Blood Orange, and appearances by Flying Lotus, Pictureplane, Mykki Blanco, Merchandise, Thieves Like Us, Hot Sugar, Twerps, Madeline Follin of Cults, and Tao Lin!  Once again, it’s nearly too good to be true, but as you will see in the video, it’s all true.

Thanks again so much to all of the artists who agreed to be interviewed.

Thanks again to Shirley Braha for being an awesome partner in crime.

Thanks again to MTV Hive for an experience I will never forget.

Thank you, thank you, thank you!

And with no further delay, check out the World’s #1 Blogger episode of “Weird Vibes.”

CMJ 2012 was such a great experience for me.  I was fortunate enough to host a CMJ-themed episode for MTV’s Weird Vibes.  This meant that I got to skip lines, check out a ton of live music, hang out with the rich and fabulous and interview bands.  If there was ever a gig I was born to do, this is it!  You’ll be hearing more and seeing the episode very soon and of course, I will let you know all the details.   But for now, I want to hip you to some singers and bands you might not be familiar with.

This post is about DIIV.  Formerly known as “Dive,” the quartet from Brooklyn is an indie rock/dream pop/shoe gaze band.  If none of that makes sense to you, think of a smooth, psychedelic rock sound with trippy and mellow vocals.  DIIV has a hug e buzz around them and they were one of the most talked about bands at CMJ.  I caught the tail end of their set – like literally the last note, so I had to discover their music on my own.  I am really liking their album “Oshin” and I recommend it to you!

DIIV was super cool to chat with as I quizzed them about some of the various rockstars they’ve hung out with.  This experience made me realize – HOLY SHIT!  I’ve met a lot of people!  (And Universe, I am deeply grateful so  please bring me more great experiences!)

DIIV is on Twitter (their name is @lovealien) and so is According2g.com (@according2g).  FOLLOW US!

Thanks again DIIV for a great interview and for the great music!  I know you’re going to be HUGE!
