Dave Longstreth of Dirty Projectors

On September 11, 2010, Brooklyn’s experimental rockers Dirty Projectors took a quick little subway ride into Manhattan where they played a sold out show at Terminal 5.  Lead singer Dave Longstreth remarked to the crowd that it felt just like playing Cake Shop (a very small venue in New York), but just with more balconies.  This was my first time seeing them live and I liked what I heard.  Their music sometimes meandered into random territories such as screeching guitar solos, a cacophony of shrill vocals by the two female backing vocalists and at times, you wouldn’t know which band member was going to sing next.  Though their music is experimental, they did not experiment and call on Bjork to do guest vocals like they did on a recent collaborative project.  They also did not implore the huge curtain behind the band to show projections or even dirty projections.  Maybe the projector was dirty?  Based on the reactions of the crowd, who were loving every second, this was not quite an experiment gone awry.
