Sam Sparro is back! The electro-funkateer performed his first live gig in New York in quite some time on October 3, 2011 at Dominion.  It was my first time at the venue and I had fun.  The sound was great and the venue is small and intimate (read: if any of your favorite performers play there – GO!)  The night began with a DJ set from Nomi Ruiz of Jessica 6 and she spun some great tracks from The Rapture and her former band Hercules and Love Affair.   I’ve never seen Sam Sparro live before tonight and I am so glad I got a chance to catch him doing what he does best – funking up the stage!  Musically he sounds a bit like Prince meets Daft Punk and that works just fine, according2g.  What has Sam been up to since his self titled 2008 debut album?  From the lyrics of his new songs, he was getting his heart broken, getting betrayed by those closest to him, realizing that fame and all its trappings can bring you down and also discovering that it’s up to you to choose to live a happy life.  No person or objects can decide that for you.

Though the lyrics tended to be heavy and sad at times, if you liked his first album, you’ll love the new songs.  Sam Sparro also told the crowd how great it was to be back playing for us and everyone in the audience returned the love.  He also applauded the protesters at #OccupyWallStreet and what he said rings true – it’s a dirty job, but somebody’s got to do it.  I was very happy to see that he is also taking a stand in the fight against the fat cats on Wall Street that are robbing from the poor to give to the rich.  Sam’s band was funky as hell and there were many sing-a-longs throughout his hour long set.  In addition to new songs, we also got to hear classic tracks such as “Pocket,” “21st Century” and “Black and Gold.”

I spoke with Sam after the show and he told me that his new album will be released next April.  While we wait for the album to come out, we can hunt down the person that broke cutie-pie Sam Sparro’s heart.  How could anyone hurt someone so nice and so funky?!  You can see a picture of Sam and I after the jump as well as the set list.  I haven’t had this much fun with someone named Sam in a very long time, so thanks for that!

Video: Scissor Sisters vs. Kylie Minogue

The Scissor Sisters know how to throw a dance party!  On February 4, 2011, Jake Shears and Ana Matronic, two of our beloved Scissor Sisters, were doing a very rare DJ set at the Museum of Natural History in New York.  It was a super fun night watching Jake and Ana shake their groove things on stage while the entire museum danced our asses off.  Every song they played was thumping and it was definitely a great way to see my friend BB3 usher in his birthday (and have a very happy birthday BB3)! One of the songs we were treated to was a mashup of the Scissor Sisters’ “Invisible Light” mashed up with Kylie Minogue’s “Can’t Get You Out Of My Head.”  The video you are about to see is admittedly not the greatest, but where else are you going to hear this great remix?  The answer of course is  Check in daily for the very best of the music and art scene in New York!

On stage:  Jake Shears, Ana Matronic and DJ Sammy Jo.  Get ready to throw yourself a silent rave!

Can’t get the invisible light out of my head!

On November 9, 2010, Erasure’s lead singer Andy Bell did a very rare DJ set at The Ritz in New York and then treated the club to a 3 song live set that included a great dance version of the Erasure classic “A Little Respect.”

It looked and sounded exactly like this….
