Sometimes life is too surreal to be believed. I am a die-hard Janis Joplin fan and several years ago, I was elated that her appearances on the Dick Cavett Show were released in full on DVD. One of the best episodes was from 1970, where just mere months before Janis died, she appeared on the Dick Cavett Show and one of the other guests was actress Raquel Welch. The episode is epic in every way from Janis’ performance of “Get It While You Can,” to her and Raquel engaging in conversation with Dick Cavett. The Cavett box sets that are available on DVD are so great, if you don’t have them or haven’t seen them – I cannot recommend them highly enough. Now that you know the back story, imagine finding out that for a Raquel Welch retrospective film festival, the legendary Dick Cavett would interview Raquel in person to talk about her career?! I hoped that one of the discussion topics would be about Janis and lo and behold – the first part of the interview granted me my wish. I am passing this greatness onto you, so please enjoy watching Dick Cavett and Raquel Welch talking about Janis Joplin on February 11, 2012.
On February 11, 2012, I was in the presence of greatness! The Dick Cavett show had its first run before my time, but thanks to the magic of DVDs, I’ve been able to see Dick Cavett interview Hollywood, comedy and musical legends from Jimi Hendrix and Janis Joplin to Katharine Hepburn and Marlon Brando. His show was so ahead of its time as he really helped show sides of famous icons that were rarely captured on film. Dick Cavett interviewed Raquel Welch as part of a retrospective on Raquel’s film career and seeing this interview in person was such a treat! I met Mr. Cavett before the interview took place and he could not have been nicer. He was very gracious to take a photo with me and moments later, a female friend of mine asked for a photo as well and Cavett replied, in typical Dick Cavett fashion, “I thought you’d never ask!” Wow! If you have not seen the Dick Cavett Show box sets, I urge you to remedy that immediately! Every episode is amazing. Thanks so much Dick!
I seriously have to say, Adele is one of the nicest people on the planet! I met the Grammy Award winning singer on February 11, 2011 prior to a secret show she was doing in New York and she was so cool! The weather was frigid and she stopped and chatted with me and signed my “19” CD cover. Due to the weather, I struggled to get my pen out and she told me to take my time! I told her what a big fan I was and she also thanked me for my support and even wished me a great weekend! Thanks to this encounter, I most certainly will! What a sweetheart. Thanks again Adele and I hope you have a great weekend too!
