Abe Vigoda

Michael Vidal of Abe Vigoda

On February 13, 2011, California’s “tropical punk band” Abe Vigoda opened for Wild Nothing at NYC’s Bowery Ballroom.  Their music was a lot more electronic than I thought it would be, based on on-line descriptions of the bands’ sound.  Lead singer Michael Vidal has a very intense stage presence and his performance reminded me of a bobble-head doll as he didn’t stop moving for the duration of the set.  I didn’t stick around to meet the band after the show, but I would have loved to have had the chance to tell them that I’ve met the actual Abe Vigoda, the actor whom the band are named after.  Next time…

Minks

On February 13, 2011 Brooklyn based band Minks opened for Wild Nothing at Manhattan’s Bowery Ballroom.  Their music features harmonies from singers Sonny Kilfoyle and Euro songstress/actress/Chanel model Amalie Bruun.  I enjoyed what I heard as their sound was a bit like Fleetwood Mac with a harder edge.  Minks announced many times that they were very excited to be playing for us and the crowd returned the love.  You can download 2 Minks tracks for a limited time courtesy of Stereogum.

On February 13, 2011, Virginia’s indie-rock band Wild Nothing covered Primal Scream’s “Velocity Girl” at New York’s Bowery Ballroom!  It looked and sounded exactly like this…

Enjoy!

Jack Tatum of Wild Nothing

February 13, 2011 was the second time I saw Virginia’s indie rock band Wild Nothing perform.  The sold out show took place at New York’s Bowery Ballroom and I loved it just as much as the first time I saw them.  Without being derivative, their music sounds like lost Smiths songs.  Lead singer Jack Tatum sings about living in dreams, dying, cigarettes and other macabre subjects.  Gotta love it!  Wild Nothing played their entire debut album “Gemini” as well as a cover of “Velocity Girl” by Primal Scream!  A video of that will be coming soon, so please be patient.  You can search the According2g.com archives for a video of their track “Live In Dreams” from my first Wild Nothing concert experience.  After seeing Wild Nothing twice all I can say is, I can’t wait for a new album and the next show!
