Francis Farewell Starlite

Happy birthday to Francis Farewell Starlite, lead singer of Francis and the Lights.  I’ve seen Francis in concert several times and in addition to being a great performer with good songs and a fabulous stage presence, he is one of the very few performers that really mixes it up when it comes to the live performance.  I’ve seen Francis perform with a full band as well as a solo piano show.  He pulls them both off effortlessly and with each passing moment, the audience falls more in love.  Francis is also super-creative and he’s recording new music all the time.  He is very generous to his fans and he posts video clips on his official website frequently, so it’s worth checking his site often.  Hope you have a great day Francis and I look forward to seeing you perform soon!

If you are a loyal reader of this site, you’ll know that I really love seeing Francis and the Lights in concert.  You never know what to expect at his shows – It could be lead singer Francis Farewell Starlite’s funky dance moves, Francis’ funky dance grooves, all of the above and in this case, a solo piano show where he covered Elton John’s classic “Mona Lisas and Mad Hatters.”

Enjoy this cover from a very talented performer I think you are going to be hearing a lot more about.

Francis and the Lights - Le Poisson Rouge

Francis Farewell Starlite of Francis and the Lights

When you go to a Francis and the Lights show, you never know what to expect.  Last night was my fourth time seeing the soulful/funk/pop group at a sold out show at a sold out show at New York’s Le Poisson Rouge and once again, the show was entirely different than the previous three shows I’ve seen!  Lead singer Francis Farewell Starlite (yes, that’s really his name) performed a solo piano show – in the round!  I’ve seen them perform as a full band, with only two members and last night’s solo show. The arrangements for the songs have been changed every time!  This is a testament to the talents of Francis Farewell Starlite because after seeing over 200 bands last year, very few groups even bothered to mix it up this way.

Francis!

He played for about an hour and a half, telling stories about the songs and performing some of his best loved tracks including “A Modern Promise,” “It’ll Be Better,” “Strawberries,” and “For Days.”  He also covered Elton John’s classic “Mona Lisas and Mad Hatters,” Radiohead’s “How To Disappear Completely” and also performed Drake’s “Karaoke” (of which Francis produced). A video of “Mona Lisas and Mad Hatters” will be coming soon, so stay tuned.  The show was really amazing and I got the opportunity to tell Francis my thoughts after the show was over.  As always, he is a super cool guy and he even took my friend and I backstage, chatted with us and gave us shots of Jack Daniels!

Francis and the Lights are playing the Coachella festival in April 2011, and I expect when a crowd that large discovers the magic and talent of Francis Farewell Starlite, word will spread like wildfire.  Once again I wish him the success he deserves and I can’t wait until his next show!  I highly recommend you catch Francis and the Lights when they come to your town!

See the set list after the jump.

Francis Farewell Starlite and G

I was really happy to run into Francis Farewell Starlite the other day.  I’ve met him once before, but the first time I met him, I was largely unfamiliar with the music of his band Francis and the Lights.  Since that day, I’ve really gotten into his music and I got a chance to tell him how awesome I think it is.  I also got the chance to tell him how much I appreciate the fact that his live shows are ALWAYS different and it stands out even more in this day and age because hardly anyone is taking the time to change it up.  I mentioned specifically the song “Strawberries,” that I’ve seen performed with a full band (and included guitar solos) and then just a few short weeks later, he performed an entirely different version on keyboards.  He was super cool and it was a real pleasure chatting with him.  He’s gotten some great exposure recently with being one of the most mentioned “buzz bands” at the CMJ music festival in New York and he’s also expanded his fan base by landing opening slots for MGMT and Mark Ronson.  I expect you’ll be hearing a lot more from Francis and the Lights in the coming months – so keep your eyes and ears out for the funk!
