“….But can I just ask, the reader, us, we … as non-rhetorically as possible: don’t we seem dumb? didn’t MTV lose the fight against themselves? Didn’t Rock’n’Roll STOP? Why are the lights so bright? isn’t our talent as artists enough? Why do we try SO hard? Does a moonman mean what it did back then? Should we feel pumped when we get one? Should our mom’s cry? I am not even thinking about it that hard. I will close my eyes in 90 seconds and have total peace… But, seriously. Why are we waving around so much? Why do we NEED this shit so bad? Why don’t we just have MUSIC? DO music? soul? I don’t knowI don’t mean to criticize. Anyone. Actually. Except for MTV. You might have had a very large opportunity to be stabilize your self as a global presence of culture and art about 15 years ago and you fucked the dog. Sorry.” – Justin Vernon of Gayngs (as pictured above) and Bon Iver on the 2011 MTV Awards.
“You people are all up Justin Vernon’s ass right now, but I sure didn’t see you at the Gayngs concert.” – Geoffrey Dicker

Gayngs, the mellow-rock supergroup are back! Their tour in 2010 had many highs and lows (Prince showing up at their MPLS show, their tour bus getting stolen forcing an early end to the tour). I loved them when I saw them. Gayngs’ debut album “Relayted” has been given the remix treatment, by members of the Minneapolis remix collective Doomtree.
While a release date has not been set for the remix album “Affilyated,” Pitchfork has provided the tracklist:
01 Fight, Fuck, Fall Asleep (Cecil Otter Regrind) [ft. SIMS]
02 Coercion Van (MK Larada Regrind)
03 Cologne & Water (Paper Tiger Regrind)
04 Draper Drunk (Plain Ole Bill Regrind) [ft. Mike Mictlan and Chocolate Ox]
05 No Scrubs (P.O.S Regrind)
06 Sprinkle Juice (Lazerbeak Regrind)
07 Sand in the Lotion (Cecil Otter Regrind)
The band will also play live:
03-06 Minneapolis, MN – First Avenue
03-11 Austin, TX – Stubb’s BBQ
03-13 Denton, TX – 35 Conferette Festival
03-17 Austin, TX – Mohawk
03-18 Austin, TX – Lustre Pearle
04-15-17 Indio, CA – Coachella Music & Arts Festival
05-28 Portland, OR – Doug Fir Lounge
05-29 Quincy, WA – Sasquatch Music Festival
06-01 San Francisco, CA – The Independent
06-04 San Diego, CA – The Casbah
I’m not going to lie, Gayngs at Bowery Ballroom was pretty freakin’ cool! Aside from cramming over 10 people onto that tiny stage, Gayngs rocked the crowd with a chilled out set that included this awesome cover of Sade’s “By Your Side.” Why should the world have to wait 10 years to hear that song performed live by the original singer? I think Gayngs did an awesome job! You?

I seriously thought I’d never ever hear the song “Cry” (originally by Godley and Creme) performed live. Gayngs made this dream a reality! Not only did they play “Cry,” but it’s an awesome version too! Double plus good! Stay tuned for another great cover by Gayngs – Sade’s “By Your Side.” It’s coming soon and it’s great too!

Before seeing super group Gayngs live at the Bowery Ballroom, I figured it was going to be a good show. When they performed in their native Minneapolis earlier this year, Prince showed up for cryin’ out loud! This show did not have any sightings of the Purple One, but I did get to meet one of Gayngs singers, Justin Vernon. Since the band had so many members, I decided to watch the show from the balcony so I could see everyone. Often times, when you stand in the front row at certain venues, you actually can’t see very well. I had secured my spot when literally at the furthest point away from where I was standing, I saw Bon Iver’s lead singer and Gayngs co-lead vocalist Justin Vernon. I think you know how this story ends. Justin was really cool and he put on a great show. Thanks times two, Mr. Vernon!
