FKA Twigs (Tahliah Barnett) and Geoffrey Dicker
Hot new artist alert! Tahliah Barnett, better known as FKA Twigs is a trip hop/R&B/pop singer from Britain and in addition to her gorgeous look, her music is infectious. She performed a show at Glasslands in Brooklyn the other night and whilst she kept the mood going by virtually performing in the dark, that makes for horrible photos. So in lieu of those, I will tell you that FKA stands for “formerly known as” since another artist named Twigs was upset that she took on the name Twigs, which refers to the sound her joints make when they crack. Learn more about FKA Twigs on her website. Best of luck to you Tahliah and I look forward to seeing you again!

Alex Kapranos of Franz Ferdinand and Geoffrey Dicker
I’ve been a fan of the band Franz Ferdinand for over 10 years and before this week began, I’d never met them or seen them in concert. That changed as I was fortunate enough to attend a taping of “Live On Letterman” as well as going to a surprise DJ gig at Glasslands in Brooklyn which turned into a surprise concert by the Scottish rockers! Although I enjoyed both nights, the energy of the band and crowd at Glasslands was on fire!

The guys were super cool and enjoyed chatting with fans after the show. Hopefully they don’t burn out on that because it’s really awesome to see a hugely successful band be cool to their supporters.

In addition to taking photos, the guys signed my cds! I took a photo of the autographed cds and posted it on Instagram and the band “liked” the photo! How cool is that! I’m “According2g” on Instagram if you want to see even more photos that I take when I am out and about on my adventures. You won’t regret it! 🙂

Thanks again Franz Ferdinand and I am EXCITED for the release of “Right Thoughts, Right Words, Right Action,” which will be out in August 2013!

On July 23, 2013, Franz Ferdinand showed up at the very intimate Glasslands in Brooklyn for what was supposed to be a last minute DJ gig. It was advertised that the gig would serve as a listening party for their new album “Right Thoughts, Right Words, Right Actions” which comes out in August 2013. Instead of hearing the studio tracks, Franz Ferdinand surprised the crowd and performed a 13 song live set instead! The video you are about to see is their massive hit “Take Me Out.” You’ll have to forgive the heads bobbing in the crowd, but what can you do when you are seeing a huge band in a tiny venue. So if you can get past all that, press play and get ready to ROCK!

If you’re not aware of the band Young Empires, you really need to fix that! Their debut EP “Wake All My Youth” was released earlier this year and I’ve practically worn holes in the CD from playing it so much. The Canadian group is big back home and they are gaining momentum in the US. I’ve seen them live many times and they have been great each time. The trio has recently added a new member, a drummer, into the band and even though I already loved their sound, it’s even better now.
Young Empires played to a packed house at Glasslands Gallery in Brooklyn on July 12, 2012 and in addition to playing tracks from their EP, they also played a really great cover of A Flock Of Seagulls’ “Space Age Love Song.” Click play and enjoy! Feel free to share this video because Young Empires deserve to go viral!
On December 4, 2011, British singer Jamie Woon played a sold out show at Glasslands in Brooklyn, New York. The singer’s music is R&B, dub-step and post-dub-step! Taking the stage around 11 pm, the one hour set featured moody lighting, Jamie Woon’s smooth voice, some trippy beats and an audience that was absolutely mesmerized. Woon played 10 songs from his debut album “Mirrorwriting” and often played different arrangements of the songs like an acoustic version of “Lady Luck.” The crowd loved the show as evidenced by thunderous applause after each song. Jamie Woon is playing on December 5, 2011 at Mercury Lounge, so check him out now while you still can see him in a relatively small venue!
See the set list and a photo of my encounter with Jamie Woon after the jump.
