The movie “Silence of the Lambs” turns 20 this year. I saw “Silence” in the theater when it was released and I remember being on the edge of my seat from start to finish. I’ve seen it many times since and every time, the characters, circumstances and dialogue always manage to work themselves under my skin. The story of FBI trainee Clarice Starling working in tandem with psychopath Hannibal Lecter to catch the serial killer Buffalo Bill won a bunch of Academy Awards and became a phenomenon. The film introduced many macabre catch phrases into the lexicon such as “I ate his liver with some fava beans and a nice Chianti” and “It places the lotion in the basket.” “Silence of the Lambs” is now being retold in the funniest way possible – as “Silence! The Musical” at Theatre 80 in Manhattan.
“Silence! The Musical” stars Brent Barrett as Hannibal Lecter and Jenn Harris as Clarice Starling and they are excellent. In fact, the entire cast is excellent as are the songs, the dance sequences and the genius way “Silence!” manages to capture every nuance in the film and keep the audience laughing for 2 hours. “Silence! The Musical” faithfully sticks to the plot of the movie, advancing the story with musical sequences based on some of the film’s most memorable lines. “Silence! The Musical” is an unauthorized parody of the film, so think back to all the parts of the movie that made you laugh or cringe and they are all represented here on stage. I don’t want to reveal too many of the surprises of “Silence! The Musical,” because I think you’ll enjoy it even more if you let it unfold as you are at Theatre 80 in Manhattan. I realize that a lot of my readers are from outside the US and you might not be able to make it down to New York in time. After the jump, there are a few spoilers just for you.
“Silence! The Musical” is playing at Theatre 80 (located at 80 St. Marks Place) in New York through August 13, 2011. Get your tickets at this link.
