As you all know by now, I am a movie curmudgeon. Typically when I like a film, the rest of the world dislikes it and vice versa. With that being said, I enjoyed Tim Burton’s take on Alice in Wonderland. It’s being universally panned by critics, which is no surprise to me. Seeing the film in 3-D is the way to go, according2g. Johnny Depp looks like Madonna circa Ray of Light in every scene he is in, but he has an annoying lisp. Helena Bonham Carter is great as the Red Queen and it might be worth the price of admission alone just to see her with a huge head and a tiny body. If you are a Tim Burton fan, you’ll love the darkness and imagery he brings to this film, and as usual, Danny Elfman’s score is a work of genius. In the original Disney cartoon, there were many more images of overt drug taking and sexual situations which seem to be absent in this version, but the colorful visions in this 3-D version will provide you with a fun experience. On a scale of A to G, Alice in Wonderland gets a nice solid B.
