Pace Gallery in New York currently has an exhibit of stunning Hiroshi Sugimoto photographs on display entitled “Still Life.”   On display you will see seventeen large-format photographs from the artist’s ongoing Diorama series that date from 1976 to 2012.

These photographs are breathtaking so I recommend you see them in person as these photos do not do the originals justice.

Surface of the Third Order by Sugimoto

Surface of the Third Order by Sugimoto. Now showing at the Pace Gallery in NYC through December 23, 2011

Hiroshi Sugimoto’s work is very rhythmic and often concerns itself with mathematical functions.  His latest exhibit “Surface of the Third Order” at the Pace Gallery in New York explores the concepts of zero and infinity.  The exhibit also contains aluminum sculptures each based on mathematical formulas and are visual representations of trigonometric functions. Sugimoto’s crystal pagodas are also on display (one is pictured below) and you’ll definitely want to read the artist’s statement on the works as there are so many things going on in each work.   I recommend that you see the exhibit in person to fully appreciate the simplicity and complexity of his works as photos cannot do justice to the thought behind his masterful works of art.  Speaking of photos, Pace/MacGill Gallery (located at 32 East 57th Street #9) is showing a series of Seascape photographs.

I was fortunate enough to meet Hiroshi Sugimoto at the opening night reception and he was extremely nice.  You can see a photo after the jump.  “Surface of the Third Order” by Hiroshi Sugimoto will be on display until December 23, 2011 at the Pace Gallery (located at 510 West 25th Street) in Manhattan.
