Mr. Brainwash and G!

Wow!  What a weekend I’ve had.  Yesterday I saw a lot of amazing art and met Patti Smith, and today on Valentine’s Day, I celebrated by attending the opening of Mr. Brainwash’s new exhibit, Icons.  There’ll be lots of pictures to come as well as a review of the exhibit, but for now, here’s the story of my encounter with the elusive artist who is also known as Thierry Guetta.

Picture it, a freezing cold New York City day.  I found out the secret location of Mr. Brainwash’s new exhibit Icons (which is located at 415 West 13th Street, by the way).  The rumour on the streets was that the first 300 attendees would receive a limited edition lithograph signed by the evasive artist.  The exhibit opened at 3 pm, so naturally I was in line at noon.  I was literally the hundredth person to show up, so I was guaranteed my free print (which retails for anywhere between $500-$1000).  I braved the freezing cold for three VERY long hours, but finally, around 3 pm, Mr. Brainwash came out and met every single person that waited out in the cold to see the show.  He was super nice and very friendly.  After hearing him speak, I discovered that he is French.  Who knew?  The exhibit was amazing (though slightly disorganized).  Again, a review and pictures will be coming up in the next day or so.  By the time I left the show, I walked away with a signed print, 1 unsigned print, a poster and a stack of about 30 postcards featuring his art -all for FREE.  It was well worth the wait as he is one of my favorite artists.  If you are in the NY area between now and the end of March, you’d be a fool to miss Icons.
