Geoffrey Dicker and Alan Leeds
Alan Leeds is a god! If you like funky music, you could argue that Alan Leeds has had (and is still having) one of the best careers possible in the music industry. In the 70s, he road managed James Brown and he later won a Grammy for his liner notes on a James Brown anthology (“Star Time”). He tour managed Prince from 1983 to 1992 and became the head of Prince’s Paisley Park Studios. His brother is the ultra-funky saxophone player Eric Leeds and currently, Alan is working with Chris Rock and D’Angelo. Despite that massively impressive resume, Alan Leeds was extremely down to earth. We talked about several of the music legends listed above and I wished I could have talked to him and picked his brain for hours. You can read an excellent interview with Alan Leeds where he talks about Prince and Miles Davis and their relationship and it will give you a tiny insight into some of the cool things Alan Leeds has been a part of. It was an absolute pleasure talking to you Alan and I really hope to chat with you again some time!

I know James Brown is dead, but it’s his birthday today, May 3, so let’s celebrate the life of the Godfather of Soul. I only met the legend one time, and if you can believe it, I had a moment all alone with him. He asked me if I could hang with him for a few minutes (Um… YEAH!) and then a camera crew showed up to tape a segment of Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous. James Brown asked if I would be in the segment with him and of course I said yes. He asked me about my family and he was SO cool. I signed a release for the segment to air and when it finally did, I was cut out of it entirely! Ha! But I walked away with a souvenir from the experience – James Brown’s autograph. In addition to writing “I Feel Good,” he signed the autograph for me and my family! Too cool, according2g. I know he had many problems with the law and was not a very nice person to his many wives, but I had a really great experience and I’ve never forgotten it.

Wonder if that was James Brown’s real social security number? Not that it matters since the Godfather of Soul has departed from this earth. Glad I got to meet him before he passed. That makes me feel good!
