Love or hate James Franco, the one thing you can’t accuse him of is playing it safe.  James Franco is having a big month in New York in April 2014, as he is starring in a Broadway production of “Of Mice And Men,” (I saw it and it’s excellent, by the way) and at the Pace Gallery in Chelsea, he’s recreated an exhibit by Cindy Sherman (“Untitled Film Stills”) called “New Film Stills.”  Excuse the glare on these photos.  You gotta do the best you can when the sun is out on a lovely day and the art is encased in glass.

Recreating the exact poses Cindy Sherman did nearly 30 years ago, Franco is seen looking rather effeminate save for his facial hair, which makes this series of photos even better, according 2 G.

For those who think they’ve got James Franco all figured out, this exhibit will make them guess again and I really love that.  So many artists of all genres play it safe, and Franco for the sake of art (or perhaps even shock value) is not afraid to cross over the line, even if that finds him wearing a dress!  Go James!

“New Film Stills” by James Franco is showing at Pace Gallery (located at 508 West 25th Street) in New York through May 3, 2014.  It would be a drag if you missed it!

Must See Art: Paul McCarthy and Damon McCarthy: “Rebel Dabble Babble”

Rebel Dabble Babble

The summer of Paul McCarthy in New York continues with a must see exhibit at the Chelsea location of Hauser & Wirth in Manhattan.  Collaborating with his son (!!!!),  the 18th Street gallery has been transformed by their joint exhibit “Rebel Dabble Babble.”  The giant gallery features a mock ‘behind the scenes’ look at the alleged relationships that took place during the making of the movie “Rebel Without A Cause.”  What you will see as you enter the gallery are movie theater sized projections of different scenes of sex acts, arguments, love fests and lots of disturbing images that will stick with you long after you’ve left the exhibit. The gallery was not fond of the use of photography, so let me try and set the scene for you:  In the center of the gallery, the “movie sets” reside and on the walls of the gallery and inside the sets, the scenes, not in chronological order, are projected.  When you get to the back room, you see a ton of still photos from the movie that the McCarthy’s have made.

Actor James Franco is in some of the scenes, playing James Dean– naturally.  If you click to enlarge the second photo, you will see him shoving something up another guy’s ass!   This exhibit is not for the squeamish or easily offended, and as I am neither of those things, I loved this exhibit and recommend you open your mind and check it out as well!  These pictures do not do justice to the experience you will have in person, so make sure to visit Hauser and Wirth, located at 511 West 18th Street in Manhattan.

Here’s the rundown of where you can see all the Paul McCarthy exhibits during the summer, and I encourage you to check them out!  “Rebel Dabble Babble” runs through July 26, 2013.

Unlike many other websites that use misleading headlines to get traffic, I have no need for that.  🙂

Like in life, James Franco is a doll.  Action figures are dolls, right?  When I was a kid I played with records so I missed out on this whole craze.  But James Franco looks hot in this action figure promoting the movie Oz.  That’s all that matters.

James Franco was in New York on February 19, 2012 to show his film “My Own Private River.”  During a question and answer session afterwards, James spoke about working with former R.E.M. front-man Michael Stipe.  This is what he said….

Review: James Franco Attends Q&A of “My Own Private River”

On February 19, 2012, James Franco spoke at the Walter Reade Theatre in New York about his latest film “My Own Private River.”  When James Franco starred in Gus Van Sant’s film “Milk,” the director invited James Franco to a benefit premiere of the movie in Portland, Oregon.  The day after the premiere, James Franco got a special tour of the locations where another film directed by Gus Van Sant was shot.  That film was the 1991 picture “My Own Private Idaho.”  During this tour, Van Sant admitted that he had over 25 hours of footage comprised of dailies, outtakes, and miscellaneous unused scenes.  The footage is so incredible, James Franco got permission from all parties involved to make a different cut of the film.  The result is “My Own Private River,” a feature length “alternate version” if you will, of “My Own Private Idaho.”  Per James Franco, all the footage used in his film is different than what was used in the original theatrical release and at least 40% is totally different takes, different dialogue or completely unused footage.  Knowing that River Phoenix would die of a drug overdose less than 2 years after this film was completed, the footage and story are even more poignant.

“My Own Private River” is really great for so many reasons.  Of course the top few reasons:  never before seen gorgeous footage of Keanu Reeves and River Phoenix, alternate scenes from a movie that so many people love dearly and getting Michael Stipe formerly of the band R.E.M. to record some music for this picture.  And on that note, stay tuned for a video of James Franco talking about Michael Stipe’s involvement!  James Franco has no intentions of his cut of the film “competing” with the original picture and herein lies the bad news – the film will probably not be released.  The film was made as an art piece and has already been shown at the Gagosian Gallery in Los Angeles.  The original idea (and it exists, per James Franco) is a 12 hour cut of the film!  We can only hope that one day, the powers that be will unite and “My Own Private River” will be available for the masses to see.  Until then, if you hear of a screening of this movie and you like any of the things I’ve mentioned in this report – make sure you don’t miss it!
