2013 is turning out to be a great year for music. Barely one month into the new year and I’ve already seen three tremendously talented artists: Jake Bugg, Jessie Ware and Tom Odell. 22 year old British singer/songwriter Tom Odell performed his first ever show in the USA at New York’s Piano’s on January 24, 2013. Despite sub-freezing temperatures, the sold out show was packed to the rafters and Tom Odell lived up to (and surpassed) all the online buzz.
Tom Odell performed a brief 5 song set, but the power of his voice more than made up for the length of the show. He has a powerful voice that has elements of Thom Yorke of Radiohead and musically his sound marries folk, pop and beautiful piano ballads perfectly. You can have a listen for yourself at Tom Odell’s official website as you can download demos of “Another Love” and “Sense” for free for a limited time. His debut album “Long Way Down” is slated for release in April 2013 and there is no doubt, Tom Odell is a name you’re going to be hearing about for a long time! He announced that he has plans to come back to the states later in 2013, so put him on your radar if he is not already and make sure you see him live!
Theophilus London does his job as a rock star: he can take a stranger off the street (such as myself), who’d never heard a note of his music prior to seeing him live and turn them into a fan! I met the singer/rapper following his amazing performance at New York’s Bowery Ballroom on January 24, 2011 and he was super cool. His set was so funky! He announced during the show that his debut album will be released in early February and I cannot wait to get it! You can get a sneak preview of the greatness you’ll hear by downloading his new single “Flying Overseas” for free on Green Label Sound’s official website. It’s hard to see in the photo, but the cap Theophilus London was wearing says “FUKK” on it. Love it! Thanks Theophilus and I am looking forward to hearing your album!
On January 24, 2011, Swedish electronic band Little Dragon played a sold out show at New York’s Bowery Ballroom. The band previewed a few new tracks from their upcoming album, which is scheduled for release in the Spring. One of the songs is called “Summertearz” and when you click play, you’ll have an exclusive first listen. Enjoy!
On January 24, 2011, I was in the presence of one of my living deities: Mr. Andy Rourke, the bass player from The Smiths! He was at the Theophilus London/Little Dragon show at Bowery Ballroom and he was extremely nice when I met him! He was with a friend, so I didn’t want to geek out too much and gush over how much I love him, but I did ask for a photo, and as you can tell from above, he gladly obliged! Thank you SO much Andy! You have no idea how thankful I am!
