Head on over to Gallery Bar in New York to quench your thirst and see some groovy art. Gallery Bar changes their exhibits every few weeks and currently on display is an exhibit from artist Hulbert Waldroup.  He pays homage to some Rock and Roll legends past and present and even has some paintings of some of the women you’d expect to find hanging out backstage.  Special thanks to Darin at Gallery Bar for showing me around.  Gallery Bar is located at 120 Orchard Street in New York.

If you accurately identified (from left to right): Jimi Hendrix, Bob Marley, Janis Joplin, Mick Jagger, and Bob Dylan in the above image, award yourself something nice today.

Richard Prince: T-Shirt Paintings at Salon 94

Richard Prince: T-Shirt Paintings now showing at Salon 94 in NYC through June 26, 2010.

Controversial artist Richard Prince has an exhibit at Salon 94 in New York called T-Shirt Paintings, the inaugural exhibition at Salon 94 Bowery. This exhibit is a mini-retrospective, spanning 25 years of Prince’s work.  Prince has stretched T-shirts of varying sizes and colors and has painted them in ways that only Richard Prince could.  One of my favorite pieces in the exhibit (which you’ll see a photo of below) is a white shirt with a CD sticker from Led Zeppelin’s “Houses of the Holy” affixed to the center of the piece with a few tiny specks of paint down the right hand side of the shirt.  Sometimes I like simplicity, what can I say.  After this exhibit closes, the gallery will be renovated over the summer and will reopen in September 2010.  Salon 94 is located at 243 Bowery and “T-Shirt Paintings” by Richard Prince runs until June 26, 2010.

Marilyn Monroe by Michael Kalish now showing at the Opera Gallery in New York through May 31, 2010.

Artists Logan Hicks, Anthony Lister and Michael Kalish are showing recent works at the Opera Gallery in New York and all three artists have really great stuff.  American artist Michael Kalish has become infamous for using pieces of license plates in his amazing works and some of his pieces live in the collections of people from Nancy Regan to Kid Rock!  I was really taken with these unique works of art and I highly recommend you pay a visit to see this exhibit prior to its closing date on May 31, 2010.  The Opera Gallery is located at 115 Spring Street in New York.

See Kalish’s visions of Jimi Hendrix, Diana Ross, another Marilyn Monroe and Marlene Dietrich after the jump.

Valleys of Neptune by Jimi Hendrix - Available March 9, 2010

As a life-long Jimi Hendrix fan, you can imagine my excitement when a review copy of Jimi Hendrix’ Valleys of Neptune” arrived in my mailbox today.  The album is set to be released by Sony Music Entertainment’s Legacy Recordings on March 9, 2010 and on that day, I advise you all to snatch up this album as soon as you can.  It’s so awesome!

Valleys of Neptune” consists of 60 mouth-watering minutes of previously unreleased studio recordings from the period of October 1968 to 1970.  These sessions were being recorded for the follow up to “Electric Ladyland,” but have sat in the vaults until now.  The booklet features rare photos and a comprehensive track by track description as well as recording dates and band personnel.

The sound quality on every track is so fresh, you’ll have a hard time believing that these tracks are 40 years old.  The set features completely different versions of the classic Hendrix songs “Stone Free,” “Fire”  and “Red House” plus long sought after studio versions of Elmore James’Bleeding Heart,” and Cream’sSunshine of Your Love.”  While bits of the demo version of the title track have seen the light of day on various releases, you can hear the entire four minute track in all of its glory only on this release.  “Lullaby for the Summer,” a previously unreleased instrumental shows once again why Hendrix is regarded as the best guitarist of all time.  “Crying Blue Rain,” another previously unreleased instrumental, starts of as a slow bluesy number and then picks up the pace for a funky romp that is guaranteed to put a smile on your face and a groove in your heart.

This album has it all, blues, rock, scorching guitar and of course, Jimi Hendrix’ heavenly vocals.  If you are a long-time fan of Jimi Hendrix, “Valleys of Neptune” will not disappoint and if you are new to the fold, get ready to go on a Jimi Hendrix album buying spree.  There’s also good news for the new fans as well because Legacy Recordings will also be releasing deluxe CD/DVD editions of Jimi’s classic albums “Are You Experienced?” “Axis: Bold As Love,” “Electric Ladyland” and “First Rays of the New Rising Sun” on March 9, 2010 with new documentaries that feature interviews with band members Noel Redding, Mitch Mitchell, Billy Cox, producer Chas Chandler and engineer Eddie Kramer.  PLUS, “Smash Hits,” the long out of print hits collection is being reissued and “Live at Woodstock” will be coming out on Blu-Ray.  This is going to be a great month for Hendrix fans old and new.
