On July 16, 2010, Connecticut based band The Stepkids opened for Mates of State at the Bowery Ballroom in New York. This was my first exposure to their music and I loved what I heard. The 4 piece band came out on stage, all clad in white. As the lights went down, really trippy screen projections were projected directly onto the band, as you can see above and below. The visuals matched the music as they have a sound that reminded me of MGMT mixed with Of Montreal. The music is jammy, spacey and funky! I really enjoyed what I heard. If you check out their Myspace page (link is above), you can get a feel for their live performance, which was really cool. Their first full length album will be out in August 2010. Look for these guys when they come to your town!

Mates of State
On July 16, 2010 at New York’s Bowery Ballroom, Kansas’ favorite married couple and indie pop band – Mates of State– played a sold out show. Their music is cute and upbeat and they are touring in support of their recent album of covers of fellow indie acts called “Crushes.” It was definitely a night of eclecticism as the opening acts were a sword swallower, comedian Nick Thune(who was beyond hilarious), and hallucinogenic pop band The Stepkids. Mates of State generously pulled out songs from their extensive 7 album back catalog and some of my favorite songs of the night were “The Re-Arranger,” “You Are Free,” as well as a cover of Tom Waits’ “Long Way Home.”
