On June 2, 2010, Alpha Rev opened for Chrissie Hynde’s new band JP Chrissie and the Fairground Boys at the Brooklyn Bowl in New York.  If the crowd reaction is a predictor of their future success, Alpha Rev is going to be huge!  They were called back for an encore which rarely happens for an opening band.  I thought they were great and they’ve been burning up the VH-1 video charts so I think it’s just a matter of time before Alpha Rev become household names. I was fortunate enough to meet lead singer Casey McPherson, and I am happy to report that he was extremely nice.  They closed their triumphant set with a cover of Leonard Cohen’s “Hallelujah,” and I loved their version of it.  I’m keeping my fingers crossed for a studio version!

Hope you enjoy it too.

Moments after VH-1 buzz band Alpha Rev finished an electric performance at the Brooklyn Bowl, I met lead singer Casey McPherson.  He was extremely nice during our encounter.  When I asked to take a photo with him, he quickly grabbed a nearby friend and requested the photo be taken.  I explained that I preferred to take it with my hand, and told him the story of meeting Chris Martin of Coldplay, who said those very words to me upon asking for a photo.  At the time, I had not yet perfected the self-portrait, but I’ve learned a lot since then and when I showed the photo to Casey, he was very impressed with my self-photography skills. Alpha Rev’s latest single “New Morning” is quickly burning up the charts and I expect to hear a lot of good things about them in the very near future.  Thanks again Casey and best of luck to you and Alpha Rev!

On June 2, 2010, Texas rockers Alpha Rev opened for JP Chrissie and the Fairground Boys (aka Chrissie Hynde of the Pretenders new band) at New York’s Brooklyn Bowl.  Performing songs from their latest album “New Morning,” Alpha Rev got the crowd ready to party with their blend of rock and roll mixed with violins.  They are attracting a lot of buzz in the music industry and their new single “New Morning,” is quickly climbing the VH-1 video charts.  After performing nine songs, the band came back for an encore (usually unheard of for an opening act) and performed a rousing cover of Leonard Cohen’s “Hallelujah.”  A video of “Hallelujah” is forthcoming – stay tuned!  Based on the crowd reaction and the energy of the performance, I think Alpha Rev is going to be a band you’ll be hearing a lot more from in the coming months.

On June 2, 2010, Chrissie Hydne’s new band JP Chrissie and the Fairground Boys made its New York debut at the Brooklyn Bowl.  After spending the day in the studio with two extremely talented artists, Jeanne Wilkinson and Frank Lind (more to come on both artists – stay tuned – their work is awesome!), I had planned on a nice mellow evening writing about the wonderful day I had.  I had no sooner turned on my computer when I received a text message that Chrissie Hynde of the Pretenders was performing a free show tonight.  Needless to say, I was out the door and on the subway faster than light.  First off, if you have never had the pleasure of visiting the Brooklyn Bowl, it’s an amazing space that is part bar, part bowling alley and part performance space.  It’s a really great venue to see a show and if there’s ever a band that you remotely like that plays there, go!  Having the awful sense of direction that I’ve been cursed with, I of course got lost getting out of the subway and as luck would have it I ran into Justin Bolognino of the Brooklyn Bowl who gave me perfect directions.  Thanks Justin!

Texas rockers Alpha Rev got the crowd warmed up (more to come on them, so stay tuned) and right around 10 pm, JP Chrissie and the Fairground Boys made their New York debut.  To make the night a little more intimate, they performed an hour long acoustic set that was comprised mostly of their upcoming debut album “Fidelity.”  The band usually consists of 5 members, but tonight, they were a trio of perfection. JP Jones (rumoured to be Chrissie’s lover) and Patrick Murdoch were the other members present.  Chrissie Hynde’s voice is as flawless as it has always been as they ran through songs such as “Perfect Lover,” “Meanwhile,” “Fairground,” “Fidelity,” as well as a cover of Bon Iver’s “Skinny Love.”  As the show was a benefit for Stray From The Heart, a non-profit dog rescue organization whose mission is to rescue, rehabilitate and place homeless dogs with loving new families, Chrissie gave some some shout outs to all the dog lovers in the house.  The music reminds me a bit of the Robert Plant/Alison Krauss collaboration from a few years ago and according2g, that’s enough to make most year end best album lists!  “Fidelity” is set for release in July 2010.

A video of “Fairground” is coming soon.  Stay tuned…
