Levitated Mass by Michael Heizer

Levitated Mass by artist Michael Heizer is composed of a 456-foot-long slot constructed on LACMA’s campus, over which is placed a 340-ton granite megalith. The slot gradually descends to fifteen feet in depth, running underneath the boulder.

This is on view at LACMA’s Resnick North Lawn (no admission ticket required) at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art.

Los Angeles!  If you are a fan of the films of Stanley Kubrick, you must check out an exhibit of Kubrick memorabilia at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art.  Props, set pieces, costumes, script notes, shooting schedules and tons of ephemera from all of Kubrick’s movies are represented in this exhibit as well as many of the cameras he used to make his beloved films.

My favorite parts of the exhibit were the “Clockwork Orange” and “the Shining” areas, but if “Full Metal Jacket” or “Eyes Wide Shut” was your thing, never fear, the infamous helmet shown on “Full Metal Jacket’s” poster is on view as well as the masks worn in “Eyes Wide Shut” can be seen.

Pure Beauty by John Baldessari at LACMA now showing through September 12, 2010

Los Angelinos – head on over to LACMA to see a wonderful retrospective of American artist John Baldessari’s work.  The exhibit entitled “Pure Beauty” showcases over 150 works dating back from 1962 to present day.  The mixed media exhibit features photos, paintings, videos and the artist’s books.  Photography is not allowed in the exhibit, so you’ll have to be sneaky and wait for the security guards to send text messages as I did if you want some snaps.  “Pure Beauty” runs until September 12, 2010 at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art.

See more from “Pure Beauty” by John Baldessari after the jump.
