If you liked the excellent documentary “Standing in the Shadows of Motown,” that focused on the band that played on nearly every Motown hit, here’s a movie that you are going to want to check out – “Twenty Feet From Stardom.” This documentary focuses on background singers and as the title suggests, these singers are often the glue and soul of a band, yet they are mere feet from becoming mega-famous. You definitely know their voices, but do you know their names? 3 of the stars of the film were on hand at a special screening of the film and they are ALL fabulous! Rock and Roll Hall of Famer Darlene Love has sung with everyone from Phil Spector to Elvis Presley to the Beach Boys to Bruce Springsteen to U2!!
Merry Clayton has recorded with Neil Young, Tom Jones, Joe Cocker, Ray Charles and is most notably known for singing background vocals on the Rolling Stones’ “Gimmie Shelter.”
Lisa Fischer has worked with Luther Vandross, Sting, Tina Turner, Aretha Franklin and has been a backing vocalist with the Rolling Stones for over 20 years.
Their list of accomplishments is beyond incredible and these amazing voices were happy to be in the spotlight for photo ops with yours truly. Thanks so much Darlene, Merry and Lisa! RESPECT!
You definitely need to see “Twenty Feet From Stardom” which opens in select theaters on June 14, 2013. You can watch the trailer by clicking on the link above and once you see it, there’s no way you will miss this movie!
