Here’s my predicition for one of the biggest stars of 2012: Lana Del Rey. She performed a way sold out show in New York a few weeks ago to mark one of her very first live performances. She’s going to be on Saturday Night Live (hosted by Daniel Radcliffe) in a few weeks and she’s due to make the transition from being the most talked about singer in the blogosphere to the most talked about singer in the lame-stream, I mean mainstream. One of the songs she’ll probably play on SNL is her infectiously haunting track”Video Games.”
British singer Ben Drew aka Plan B made his live debut in the United States on January 11, 2011 at New York’s Bowery Ballroom and I was there to catch all the action. I’ve been looking forward to this show for awhile because Plan B’s album “The Defamation of Strickland Banks” has been on heavy rotation on my stereo for months! I’m very happy to report that Plan B’s live performance captured the soulfulness of his album. Plan B hit the stage just around 10 pm and played a 12 song set that included “Praying,” “The Writing’s On The Wall,” “Stay Too Long,” and “The Recluse.” He also did a covers section that included “Stand By Me,” “My Girl,” “Lean On Me,” “Ain’t No Sunshine” as well as Seal’s “Kiss From a Rose.”
The sold-out crowd loved every minute of the show and most songs were audience sing-a-longs. Impressive, considering Plan B’s album has not been released in the US as of press time. Plan B is selling out arenas across the UK and Europe and I think he’s going to be big in the States too. A video of “The Recluse” will be coming soon, so stay tuned for that. I was fortunate enough to congratulate Plan B on a great performance after the show and he was really cool. A photo from that encounter will also be coming soon as well. I wish Plan B great success and with the talent he has, I doubt he’ll have any problems.
