Congratulations to Lab Art in Los Angeles for their one year anniversary in business!  I’ve been fortunate enough to visit the gallery many times over the last year and it has become a must visit destination when I am in the city.  To celebrate this amazing accomplishment, Lab Art is presenting “The Usual Suspects,” which is a ‘greatest hits’ (pun definitely intended) of the work of some of the great street artists that have been instrumental in the success of the gallery.  The All-Star lineup includes Alec Monopoly, AJL, DD’$, Cyrcle, Thank You X, Destroy All Design, Mar, Felix, Kai, Desire Obtain Cherish, Kai, Cali Killa, Gregory Siff, Louis XXX, Chad Muska, KH Number 7, Septerhed and Dog Byte.  Wowza!

Alec Monopoly

As the largest gallery of Street Art in the United States, Lab Art has its finger on the pulse of what’s hot in the streets and within its first year, a sister site at the Mondrian in LA has popped up, with more locations coming soon!

AJL

Lab Art has also hosted numerous live painting events over the last year and has received international coverage on these events.

In addition to the great art on display (which is set up like a museum!) Lab Art has been a great supporter of  this blog and I am grateful for their friendship!

But enough gushing (though I could go on).  Enjoy some photos from “The Usual Suspects!”  Lab Art is located at 217 South La Brea in Los Angeles.  Tell them G sent you!

Questions and Answers with Street Artist Mar

This Means Mar!

When you are in Los Angeles and you see really colorful street art or images of smoking hot women, what does it mean?  This Means Mar!  Mar’s work has surely stopped traffic before (and I speak from experience), but little is known about the artist.  Good news!  As you read on, you will find out a little bit more about the man behind the babes!

According2G: How did you get started in street art?

Mar:  I grew up in LA seeing people like Robbie Conal, Shepard Fairey doing political posters, and I was curious as to why they did it, but still too young to understand. In the good ole days of the Venice boardwalk, when graffiti was king, I’d go to skate with my friends and I would see guys throwing down colors, letters, names that were like another language to me. I just liked the energy around it, I guess. I remember seeing this RISK piece he did in Santa Monica and finally it clicked. I got it. I read ‘Risk’ and for the first time I understood. That word was more than a name; it was the epitome, the reason (to me) why they played that game.  Crappy backyard spray painting ensued. Never could do it right. Too disconnected. So like any other graff flunkie, I picked up stencils. Paper bag stencils became my favorite. I had no name or reason for doing it other than I liked seeing funny stuff on the street or sidewalks around town.

A2G: Can you tell us some of your heroes/influences?
