Thee Silver Mt. Zion

On May 16, 2010, Thee Silver Mt. Zion played a sold out show at New York’s Bowery Ballroom. The band’s music can be described as folk-meets-jazz-meets-post-punk!  Though I was largely unfamiliar with the band’s music when I set foot in the Bowery Ballroom, I enjoyed what I heard.  In between songs, “front man” Efrim Menuck told entertaining stories before launching into their next epic jam.  You can download a free mp3 of the group’s song “I Built Myself A Metal Bird (Live Video Version)” from our dear friends at Brooklyn Vegan.  Check them out!

Sam Mickens

On May 16, 2010, Sam Mickens’ Ecstatic Showband and Revue played the Bowery Ballroom in New York City.  Sam Mickens used to front the indie-pop group Dead Science.  Citing my beloved Prince as one of his biggest influences, Mickens sings in a signature falsetto voice that is unmistakable.  His new band is much different than Dead Science and from the first note they played, I was in heaven.  The 8-piece band is a little bit of jazz, a little bit of rockabilly and a lot of fun! Their songs remind me a bit of another beloved group of mine, Morphine, not in sound but in the way the songs are crafted.  Each one is short and to the point and nearly perfect.  Sam Mickens had the sexy swagger of a great band leader and I am really looking forward to see what the future brings for this band on the rise.  I met Sam Mickens prior to taking the stage for this sold out performance, but more on that coming soon.  You can hear a bunch of the band’s songs on their myspace page (link is above), but I couldn’t find any free legal mp3s.  However, you can get some Dead Science mp3s while supplies last from our friends at Brooklyn Vegan.  Definitely check out Sam Mickens’ voice because I think he’ll instantly turn you into a fan.
