May the 4th is Star Wars Day (May the 4th be with you, get it?!) and for music lovers such as myself, May the 4th was the night of a rare intimate performance by Erik Hassle on the roof top of The Standard Hotel in New York’s East Village.  Erik Hassle comes from Sweden and if you aren’t already a fan, you will be by the end of this article.

This was the backdrop on an extremely rare perfect weather night in New York City on May 4, 2015 as an intimate crowd of less than 100 people gathered to hear Erik Hassle perform an 8 song set that included his new single “No Words.”

As you are about to see and hear, Erik Hassle’s voice is so soulful and his dance moves are infectious.  Rather than trying to describe how awesome Erik Hassle is, just click play and watch his great new song, “No Words.”  I would also like you to pay close attention at the 2:12 mark, when Erik spotted me in the crowd and sang straight into my camera.  It’s epic!!!

Keith Haring at Gladstone Gallery in New York. Now showing through July 1, 2011

Keith Haring was born on May 4, 1958.  The late artist’s 53rd birthday was celebrated in New York with the opening night gala reception of a Keith Haring exhibit which features 133 previously unseen works on paper at the Gladstone Gallery (located at 515 West 21st Street in NYC).  The works are taken from a series called “Manhattan Penis Drawings for Ken Hicks” (1978).  Also featured are three large scale works created in 1984 and 1984.

Keith’s birthday was celebrated with a lot of love and emotion in the gallery.  I overheard many conversations of people sharing their personal experiences with Keith Haring.  Spotted in the crowd (and you can see pictures after the jump) were artist Scooter LaForge, rock and roll goddess Debbie Harry as well as Keith Haring’s parents, Joan and Allen Haring.

Keith Haring: May 4, 1958 - February 16, 1990

Happy birthday to artist Keith Haring who was born on May 4.  Keith is one of my favorite artists for so many reasons – his art is great, he was extremely prolific, his message was always positive and fans and colleagues all agree that he was a really nice guy.  If you’ve never had the opportunity to read “Journals,” I highly recommend it.   As the title suggests, it is a collection of his journals from his pre-New York days through his tragic death from AIDS.  He was constantly questioning the established norms of the day and was doing everything he could to break down barriers and push the boundaries further.  20 years after his death, his art is more alive than ever and he is still a great inspiration.  Happy birthday Keith!  Gone, but never forgotten.
