Mermaid Day Parade 2013

If you live in New York, you simply must experience the Mermaid Day Parade which is held on the first Saturday of each summer in Coney Island.  At the Mermaid Parade, you will see Mermaids, Mermen and all sorts of people lively sea-themed costumes.  New Yorkers love a good parade and this is the best of the bunch.  It seems to be the one time that people of all ages, genders, sizes and shapes get together and express their creativity and freedom and I love it!  Enjoy more photos from the 2013 Mermaid Day Parade.  If sea nudity offends you, turn back now and don’t say I didn’t warn ya!

The Mermaid Day Parade is one of my favorite yearly events in New York.  On the first Saturday of summer, people flock to Coney Island for this annual event that features a sea themed parade with people dressed as their favorite sea creatures.  Click on the link above to see selection of pictures and you’ll know why it’s an event that should not be missed.  The 2013 Mermaid Day Parade is in danger of being canceled due to rising costs.  Enter Amanda Palmer.  The performance artist, Kickstarter enthusiast and sometimes lead singer of Dresden Dolls rounded up some of her friends for a last minute show at New York’s Bowery Ballroom on May 25, 2013 to raise money to try and save the parade.

The show featured covers of songs like Janis Joplin’s “Mercedes Benz,” but with Mermaid Parade inspired lyrics.  Amanda, who dressed as a mermaid, also brought out Brian Viglione of Dresden Dolls on stage for a few songs.  The final song of the night was Amanda Palmer solo on her ukelele singing an ode to the instrument that I quite enjoyed.

I spotted NYC Taper in the audience, so check his site in the next few days for an audio recording of the show.  At press time, the Parade has reached 88% of it’s $100,000 goal, and with just a few weeks to go, every dollar helps.  Please read this blog post to find out how you can donate to help save the Mermaid Day Parade.

On behalf of New York, thanks to Amanda Palmer and friends for donating their time and energy to help save this event.  Their dedication is extremely inspiring!  After the jump, see a classic “encounters with G” photo of Amanda Palmer taking a bite out of my face!

Mermaid Day Parade 2011

Mermaid Day Parade 2011

The Mermaid Day parade in Coney Island in New York celebrates the coming of summer.  Held on the first Saturday of the summer each year, people come in from all over New York to rejoice and celebrate that we’ve all made it through another year.  I’ve been coming to the Mermaid Day Parade since I moved to New York (except one year where it rained) and it’s really an event that you can’t miss.  Everyone is so free.  You see people of every size, shape, color, sexual preference, economic background and kinky fetish all in one spot.  Even if it’s only for a few hours once a year, everyone gets along!  It’s really wonderful to experience because as we all know too well, “the real world” can’t get its act together and get over their petty differences to realize we are all renters for a very short time on this planet of mystery.  Overall, I think this year has not been as good as previous years.  It’s obvious to me that the great depression of 2011 that we are in is seriously ruining everyone’s good mood.  It’s very sad.  But if the people can still pull together to have an event such as the Mermaid Day Parade, there’s still hope.  Now enjoy 10 of my favorite photos!  Thanks to everyone that posed.  You all worked it!
