Gonzales Y Gonzales
Good news for New York City taste buds. Bad news for our waist-lines! The legendary Mexican restaurant, Gonzales Y Gonzales closed its doors at the end of January 2011 after 22 years in business. The block long restaurant and bar in Soho was set to become a Chipotle but luckily, it was not meant to be. Gonzales Y Gonzales will be reopening in the Fall of 2011 in its original space! The entrance now will be exclusively on 192 Mercer Street. I’ve had so many yummy meals and delicious margaritas at Gonzales Y Gonzales. I am very excited!

Another New York institution is gone. Gonzalez Y Gonzalez, one of the yummiest Mexican restaurants in New York, closed its doors on January 31, 2011 after 22 years in business. The NoHo restaurant located at 625 Broadway had the longest bar in the city. It stretched one city block! I’ve been eating there since I moved to the city and it had become a popular hangout after Gail and I had our urban adventures checking out the downtown art scene. If you sat at the bar, you could get a margarita for the bargain price of $5 in addition to an endless supply of yummy tortilla chips and salsa. The service was always great and you never walked out of Gonzalez Y Gonzalez without a tummy ache from eating so much. Their lease was up and for financial reasons, they decided to shut their doors. The venue will become home to the fast food chain Chipotle! So sad. RIP Gonzalez Y Gonzalez. Thanks for the memories. Thanks for the delicious food. Thanks for the ambiance. And of course, thanks for all the chips I’ve consumed over the years.
