Ssion

Cody Critcheloe of Ssion

Ssion!  If you don’t know this dance/punk performance art collective and band from Kansas City, you’d better put them on your radar immediately…  but only if you enjoy seeing a band that will keep you dancing all night while you watch extremely trippy visuals on the screens behind them as they perform tracks that are both funky and rockin’.  Lead by Cody Critcheloe, Ssion (pronounced “shun”) played the first of 3 nights at the Museum of Modern Art PS1 in Queens.  Ssion is previewing new tracks from their upcoming album “Bent,” which will be released in July, 2011.  Cody Critcheloe is a little bit Freddie Mercury, a little bit Jake Shears and a whole lot of entertaining!  He danced all night long, and had drag queens and cross dressers dancing on stage with him to make the evening more wild.  Perhaps best of all, Casey Spooner of Fisherspooner was a special guest and he welcomed the Spring to New York by wearing slightly more than a smile (see a picture after the jump).

The crowd was dressed to the nines and the museum was packed.  One thing was clear – everyone was there for one reason only: to have a great time.  This show is definitely a contender for one of the best shows I’ve seen in 2011.  It combined art and music perfectly and was fun from start to finish.  If you missed this show, it is a pity, but you have two more chances to catch Ssion at PS1.  They’ll be performing on May 14 and 15, 2011 and you can get tickets in the link above.  The show begins around 9 pm and I highly recommend you see it.

See more pictures after the jump including Casey Spooner wearing very little and the gratuitous armpit hair shot  of Cody(for my gays), the set list and a photo from my backstage encounter with Cody Critcheloe.

You can see this at the Museum of Modern Art in New York.  Is Yoko Ono’s message of love and peace as meaningful today as it has been for the last 40 years?  YES!

An Encounter with Magician David Blaine

David Blaine and G

On October 30, 2010, at PS1 (a division of the Museum of Modern Art), they hosted a 2 day event called Move!  The event paired artists with fashion designers and it was really cool.  Magician David Blaine was on hand as he was part of an installation that featured the short film “Dressed for Dinner” (directed by Adam Kimmel).  In the video, David Blaine is underwater in a school of sharks while smoking a cigar!  He keeps the cigar lit, blows smoke underwater and somehow does not get eaten by the sharks!  Don’t ask me how he did that, but it was not photoshopped!

David Blaine - Dressed For Dinner

As David Blaine toured the other floors of the exhibit, I met him and he was super cool.  I didn’t disappear and we both turned out in the photo, so I have proven that our encounter was not an illusion.  Thanks again David!  I am in awe of the tricks you perform.

David Byrne - Appearing at MOMA on April 13, 2010.

David Byrne from the Talking Heads will be at New York’s Museum of Modern Art on April 13, 2010 to sign copies of his latest CD “Here Lies Love,” a 2-CD oddessy that was composed with DJ Fatboy Slim and is about former Phillipines first lady Imelda Marcos.  Byrne will not be signing other memorabilia, so if you want to get that stuff signed, be sneaky!  Read more about the event here.

Tim Burton and the Lurid Beauty of Monsters Exhibit

Tim Burton exhibit at MOMA now through April 26, 2010

Aside from loving The Nightmare Before Christmas and the first 2 remakes of Batman, I am not a huge Tim Burton fan.  That changed dramatically when I went to the Tim Burton and the Lurid Beauty of Monsters Exhibit at MOMA with the always fabulous Gail.  The exhibit was very crowded, so I’d advise that you use the above link to get your tickets in advance, as it’s been sold out for weeks.

The man has been creating art (and thankfully cataloging it) since he was a little kid, and it’s all on display now at New York’s Museum of Modern Art.  There must have been a thousand works in this exhibit.  You’ll see paintings, doodles, unreleased cartoons, costumes, renderings and models from this brilliant man.  There’s stuff from all of his major films (Pee Wee’s Big Adventure, Black Cauldron, Batman, Batman Returns, Edward Scissorhands, Ed Wood, James and the Giant Peach, The Nightmare Before Christmas, Corpse Bride,  Mars Attacks, Sweeney Todd and the list goes on…) A few of my favorites were a drawing of “Vincent” that was autographed by the inspiration Vincent Price, with a note saying “I wish I was him”; a handwritten letter to Johnny Depp with an idea for a line he should say in “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory” and a rejection letter from Disney on a children’s book that Burton hand illustrated when he was a kid that basically said he is talented but he’s not commercial enough.  Who’s laughing now?  If you even remotely like his work, this exhibit is a must see. They were very strict about no photos (read: buy the $70 coffee table book instead), but I got a few for my faithful.  Enjoy them after the jump (and there’s more on Gail’s blog.  Link is above).
