The Beatles

To celebrate the 50th anniversary of The Beatles landing in America, Morrison Hotel Gallery has a special exhibit of Beatles photos on display curated by Julian Lennon.  25 photos are on display in New York and a further 25 are being shown in Los Angeles.

Paul and George

Many of these photos have never been seen before and as you can see in the above photo of Paul McCartney, it is absolutely stunning.

Pattie Boyd, who took the above photo of the Beatles circa “The White Album” was in attendance at the opening night reception.  More on Pattie in a moment.

The Morrison Hotel Gallery is located in its new space at 116 Prince Street, Second Floor in Manhattan.

As a bonus photo, the Ed Sullivan Theater, where the David Letterman Show now tapes, commemorated the Beatles 50th anniversary by posting this flashback sign above the theater, which I froze my little buns off to photograph for you, my dear readers 🙂

Now back to Pattie Boyd.  Pattie was married to George Harrison and was with George on the night that George and John Lennon took LSD for the first time, which is arguably one of the most important events in music history as the night totally changed the Beatles sound into something much more experimental which of course has influenced every band to come out since.  She is the inspiration behind tracks such as “Something” and “For You Blue” and as she was later married to Eric Clapton, she is also the inspiration for “Layla.”  WOW!  She attended the opening night reception and was extremely nice.  See what the gorgeous (and still gorgeous) Pattie Boyd looks like after the jump.

If you are a fan of the punk and hip-hop scene, you’ll definitely want to head over to the Morrison Hotel Gallery to check out their latest exhibition  ‘Catch the Beat’ The Roots of Punk and Hip Hop Photographs by Janette Beckman & David Corio.  Though viewing punk and hip-hop images together seems at first like an odd combination, both styles of music raised the bar a lot higher and seeing these images together will help viewers to realize how important Punk and Hip Hop are to the history of music and photography.

The Photography of Curt Gunther - The Beatles at the Morrison Hotel in New York. Now through July 18, 2010.

The Morrison Hotel Gallery has done it again!  They are currently presenting the photography of the late Curt Gunther, who took some iconic, but rarely seen photos of The Beatles.  The exhibit boasts dozens of great prints of John Lennon, Ringo Starr, George Harrison and Paul McCartney – the beloved Beatles.  Just when you thought you’d seen everything, the Morrison Hotel Gallery has stunning photos from the Beatles 1964 American Tour that are sure to be new to you.  Susan Brandt of the the Morrison Hotel Gallery told me on my recent visit that after Curt Gunther passed away, his son discovered these photos and complied this collection to honor the memory of his late father.  The results are an amazing tribute to a man who had access to intimate moments with four guys from Liverpool who are arguably bigger than… well, nevermind.  Thanks for the information Susan!  If you are in the New York area and you love the Fab 4, you owe it to yourself to take a trip to the Morrison Hotel Gallery to see this wonderful exhibit.  The Morrison Hotel Gallery is located at 124 Prince Street in New York.  The Photography of Curt Gunther runs though July 18, 2010.  Don’t miss it!

Jim Morrison at the Morrison Hotel

Jim Morrison by Joel Brodsky at the Morrison Hotel in New York.

Only in my life could a place called the Morrison Hotel be located on Prince Street (my two favorite singers of all time)!  The Morrison Hotel is not just a place – it’s an amazing art gallery that has all kinds of amazing rock and roll ephemera and their current exhibit (at the location on 124 Prince Street) is one of the late Joel Brodsky, who captured so many iconic images of Jim Morrison.  You are probably familiar with the images, but when you see the prints blown up, you might wet yourself as I did.  The photos look like they were taken yesterday and they are simply stunning to feast your eyes on.  Since the photos are copy written, I was allowed to take gallery view shots and present them to you.  If you are a fan of The Doors, you owe it to yourself to catch this exhibit – it will really light your fire.  Check the Morrison Hotel Gallery website for more details.

See some more of Joel Brodsky’s amazing photos after the jump.
