New World Nightmares by Jesse McCloskey. Now showing at Claire Oliver in New York through February 12, 2011

The 2011 New York art scene has begun!  If you are in the area, I recommend checking out “New World Nightmares” by Jesse McCloskey, which is now showing at the Claire Oliver Gallery.  McCloskey begins each work by making several large colorful abstract paintings which he then cuts into hundreds of exacting sculptural shapes.  These small pieces of painted paper are then painstakingly applied to a stretched canvas, layer by layer, building up dimension, color, impact and design.  It’s impossible to tell from these photos, but each canvas is 20 to 30 layers thick!  You definitely have to check this out with your own eyes.

I really like the colors that Jesse McCloskey uses in his works.  When I spoke with the artist for the opening night gala reception, he mentioned that each painting is quite heavy because of all the layers he uses.  He was very nice and you can see another awesome painting by Jesse McCloskey as well as a photo with my encounter with the artist after the jump.

New World Nightmares by Jesse McCloskey is now showing at Claire Oliver in Manhattan untul February 12, 2011.  Claire Oliver is located at 513 West 26th Street.
