"The Bad Artists Imitate, The Great Artists Steal" By Olek. Now showing at Jonathan LeVine Gallery in NYC through August 27, 2011
The goddess of crochet is back! When we last wrote about Olek, she had just completed an exhibit where she crocheted over the contents of an entire studio apartment. The exhibit was such a success that it’ll be featured at the Smithsonian next year in a travelling show! Olek’s latest exhibit “The Bad Artists Imitate, The Great Artists Steal” at the Jonathan LeVine Gallery finds Olek exploring new territory. As you walk up 20th street in Manhattan towards the LeVine Gallery, you’ll find street art that Olek has left for art aficionados to admire and for tourists, objects such as a crocheted shopping cart and crocheted cherry picker make for great photo ops!

Crocheted Cherry Picker by Olek
In the top photo, Olek crocheted the contents of a living room as an installation tribute to Keith Haring, where Haring famously camouflaged himself in a black and white room. You’re going to have to see the exhibit in person to experience the full magic that Olek has created. She also pays tribute (or steals from – per the quote that titles the exhibit) to artists such as Louise Bourgeois and Banksy, who once carved the Pablo Picasso quote “The Bad Artists Imitate, The Great Artists Steal” into stone and then crossed out Picasso’s name and put his own in its place.

You should not miss this exhibit under any circumstances! “The Bad Artists Imitate, The Great Artists Steal” by Olek is showing at the Jonathan LeVine Gallery (located at 529 West 20th Street #9E) in Manhattan. The exhibit runs through August 27, 2011.

Dickchicken and Olek
What a day I am having! Earlier today, I got to interview a musical icon from the 1980s (stay tuned for that post – it’s going to be GREAT). A few hours later, and a month to the day after street artist Dickchicken gave away cans of Dickchicken Noodle Soup on the streets of New York, he was back again giving away free art. Dickchicken will be participating in Summer Invitational from the Jonathan LeVine Gallery (running August 10 – 27th, 2011) alongside another one of the According2g.com all-stars, the goddess of crochet, Olek!
Dickchicken announced via Twitter that he’d be doing a series of #artdrops throughout the Chelsea area, and for the faithful, such as myself, I was able to snag a very limited edition box of “Dickchicken McNuglets.” If you are in the New York area and you missed this, you are obviously not following @dickchicken on Twitter. You are also obviously not following @according2g on Twitter either because I took a picture and sent it to my followers - live on the scene. Last but not least, you are also not following @hereandnow3 on Twitter because he also mentioned #artdrops. Remedy that situation now and follow us. Do you really want to miss my tweets where I share stories of meeting the biggest movie star in the world? That’s certainly more interesting than people who retweet the same old shit and try and take credit for the idea, according2g.
Thanks again Dickchicken for making (and giving away) great art (twice in a month, no less!) and for giving great tweet! Dickchicken will also be releasing a limited edition print on 1xRun later this month, so don’t miss it – it’s going to sell out fast. Don’t worry, I’ll post a reminder because I am ninja like that.

Olek in Black Light
YARNANA is an explosive film experience, featuring the “Crochet Madness” of New York artist, Olek. Inspired by the silent film genre, it relies solely on powerful music, sound design and physical expression. The characters speak through modern dance, physical comedy, capoeira, martial arts, poi, belly dancing, breakdance, acrobatics, gymnastics and the instincts of soul searchers. Lost on the streets of New York, a crochet girl must decide what’s real before her crochet world unravels. Sounds pretty cool, doesn’t it.
The film cannot be made without your help, so here’s how you can do your part. Olek has launched a Kickstarter campaign to help get the film funded. The donations will cover the hard costs of camera rentals, equipment and lighting rentals, costumes, props, special effects, insurance, locations, construction, food, etc.
The film is expected to begin shooting in July, so there’s no time to waste to help get “Yarnana” made.
Let’s do this everyone!
You can follow the progress of “Yarnana” on tumblr: http://yarnana.tumblr.com/
