Actual Size: Scooter LaForge and G at ‘Keith Haring’

Scooter LaForge at 'Keith Haring' at Gladstone Gallery.

May 4 is artist Keith Haring’s birthday. New York celebrated with an the opening night reception of an exhibit of previously unseen Keith Haring works on paper at the Gladstone Gallery. The drawings consisted of works from a series called “Manhattan Penis Drawings for Ken Hicks” (1978). As you can imagine, there were drawings of penises in varying sizes, states of arousal and penises that Haring drew in front of famous New York landmarks. As I got to the section entitled “Actual Size” that were drawings of Keith Haring’s own penis, I ran into fellow artist Scooter LaForge. We are both big fans of Haring’s work, so we were sharing our reflections of the artist. As any good reporter would do, I asked Scooter LaForge to answer the question that’s been on everyone’s mind: “[from the 'Actual Size' series] which one are you?”

Obsession by Cary Kwok. Now showing at the FLAG Art Foundation in New York through January 29, 2011

When I set foot in the FLAG Art Foundation in New York, it was my first exposure to the work of London based artist Cary Kwok. His exhibit “Obsession” is cleverly titled as his works show obsessive detail in the fact that the medium he uses is ball point pen! The image above is an actual shoe, colored meticulously by Cary Kwok. The exhibit features renderings of models and homo erotic images. Definitely worth a visit, if that’s your sort of thing.

The Dangerous Book Four Boys by James Franco.

The Dangerous Book Four Boys by James Franco now showing at the Clocktower Gallery in New York.

After meeting James Franco last night prior to his first ever art exhibition opening, I was extra excited to see “The Dangerous Book Four Boys,” at the Clocktower Gallery in New York. James Franco has mastered so many disciplines and now it looks like he can add art to his ever growing list. The exhibit has 16 areas of sculpture, pictures, performances and video.

The exhibit, based on the wildly popular book The Dangerous Book For Boys, deals with sexual confusion and is quite an interesting hodge-podge of mediums. There is a wooden house as you can see above and inside that is a projection of someone burning it down.

There was another room with a video, narrated by James Franco, of a version of Star Trek where Spock and Captain Kirk get it on. Well, almost. Spock can’t get an erection and instead ejacualtes through his fingertips. Luckily we are spared from seeing that horrifying image that would be enough to turn any kid straight. Ha!
