Cody Critcheloe of Ssion

Ssion!  If you don’t know this dance/punk performance art collective and band from Kansas City, you’d better put them on your radar immediately…  but only if you enjoy seeing a band that will keep you dancing all night while you watch extremely trippy visuals on the screens behind them as they perform tracks that are both funky and rockin’.  Lead by Cody Critcheloe, Ssion (pronounced “shun”) played the first of 3 nights at the Museum of Modern Art PS1 in Queens.  Ssion is previewing new tracks from their upcoming album “Bent,” which will be released in July, 2011.  Cody Critcheloe is a little bit Freddie Mercury, a little bit Jake Shears and a whole lot of entertaining!  He danced all night long, and had drag queens and cross dressers dancing on stage with him to make the evening more wild.  Perhaps best of all, Casey Spooner of Fisherspooner was a special guest and he welcomed the Spring to New York by wearing slightly more than a smile (see a picture after the jump).

The crowd was dressed to the nines and the museum was packed.  One thing was clear – everyone was there for one reason only: to have a great time.  This show is definitely a contender for one of the best shows I’ve seen in 2011.  It combined art and music perfectly and was fun from start to finish.  If you missed this show, it is a pity, but you have two more chances to catch Ssion at PS1.  They’ll be performing on May 14 and 15, 2011 and you can get tickets in the link above.  The show begins around 9 pm and I highly recommend you see it.

See more pictures after the jump including Casey Spooner wearing very little and the gratuitous armpit hair shot  of Cody(for my gays), the set list and a photo from my backstage encounter with Cody Critcheloe.

Punch Me Panda 1

Punch Me Panda starring Nate Hill

Artist Nate Hill is embarking on his most ambitious project yet.  His “Best Art Show 2011” project is performance art like you’ve never seen before.  Nate Hill utilizes Twitter to announce a time and place he’ll be showing up.  When he arrives, you’ll see the artist dressed as “Punch Me Panda.”  The rules are simple, Nate Hill wants you to kick his ass!  He asks the make-shift audience to get their aggressions out and punch him.

I attended a performance on Broadway and Barclay in Manhattan on March 17, 2011 during rush hour and it was fantastic!  The performance catches many people by surprise as they have no idea what to make of a person dressed as a panda asking people to strike him. Some people completely understood the instructions, some people stopped to gawk and take pictures and others ran away from the panda looking totally puzzled.  How long does the performance last?

Punch Me Panda. Performances last until the cops come!

Follow Nate Hill on Twitter @nateXhill to find out when the next performance will be.  Best Art Show 2011 runs (in various locations in Manhattan, Queens, Brooklyn and the Bronx) through March 31, 2011. In addition to “Punch Me Panda,” there’s also a Taxidermy Tour, “Subway Boucey Rides,” and Nate Hill will even make house calls.  Whoa!!!  In case these pictures don’t give you an idea of the awesomeness of Punch Me Panda, here’s a video!

After the jump, see a photo of me with Nate Hill!

Danni Rash makes A2G History (NSFW)

Danni Rash

Danni Rash

As you are well aware, I have a very massive autograph collection.  I’ve been fortunate enough to meet celebrities, rock stars, politicians, sports figures and artists in my life.  I’ve gotten autographs in the sunshine, the rain, backstage, on the streets, in their living rooms (on some occasions), but I never thought in a million years I’d be saying (and meaning) the next two sentences.   Artist Danni Rash made history last night when I got his autograph.  It was the first time I’ve ever obtained a signature while the signer was completely naked!

Danni Rash is performing at the Fountain Art Fair located at Pier 66 (at 26th Street and 12th Avenue).  The fair runs from March 3 – 6, 2011 and it should not be missed.  In his installation “cruciFiction,” Danni Rash stands in front of a lit cross in the nude.  Aside from being totally gorgeous and having a great body, one can only imagine what is going through his head whilst standing there for 12 hour days in New York during the winter!  I spoke with Danni Rash at two separate times on March 4, 2011 and I gleaned from our conversations that he is not only willing to get dirty for his art, but he is also willing to get naked!

Last year, I performed in an art fair wearing only a crocheted body suit from the artist Olek.  Though my face was entirely covered, the reactions from all the people I encountered made it not only one of the most interesting experiences I had in 2010, but it was also one of the most meaningful experiences I’ve ever had in my life.  As soon as the Fountain Art Fair is over and Danni Rash has had a moment to soak it all in, I am going to pester him for an interview to get his reflections on what must be one of the most surreal experiences of his life.  I witnessed strangers gawking at him, people reacting positively and negatively to his performance as well as the looks upon the faces of his friends and companions who were seeing Danni Rash in an entirely new light (pun definitely intended).

All I can say is – RESPECT!

After the jump, see Danni Rash making According2g history being the first person to ever sign an autograph for me in the nude.  These picutres contain nudity, so if you have a closed mind – OPEN IT!
