As Lady Rizo stepped onto the stage at New York’s Le Poisson Rouge on January 20, 2011 for yet another sold out show, my first thought was “it’s so good to be in her presence again.” I’ve seen Lady Rizo and the Assettes perform many times and I truly think it’s impossible to leave her show without a huge smile on your face. Lady Rizo has a great voice, is funny as hell, wears wonderful costumes and she is a master at rearranging familiar songs in a totally different way. For example, she performed a very dramatic (and hilarious) version of Jamie Foxx’s “Blame It (On the Alcohol).” She spoke the lyrics, including the rap interlude and even took shots of tequila during this performance for effect. How can you not love someone who does what it takes to get the job done? Also performed was a jazzy version of Guns N’ Roses’ “Welcome To The Jungle.”
Though she existed before Lady Bohemian Rhapsody Gaga, the only Lady in my life paid tribute to the queen of the pop charts and performed a Dixieland Band meets country music version of “Poker Face.” It was great (better than the original version, according2g), but changing the arrangement makes you realize how stupid the lyrics are. “Bluffin’ with my muffin” – seriously?! If you missed Lady Rizo tonight, don’t worry! She’s got a monthly show called “Unescorted” at Joe’s Pub. Click here to get tickets. Her shows sell out quickly, so don’t miss your chance to see a great show that will make you forget the horrors of the world, if only for 2 hours at a time.
