Weird Vibes

Weird Vibes

As you all know, my life is filled with fun, excitement, art, rock & roll, celebrities and experiences that are at times too bizarre to be true, and yet, I have no reason to lie (plus I have proof).  That’s why I started carrying a camera around with me.   One of the most awesome things to happen to me in 2012 was getting a call from MTV Hive to host their CMJ-themed episode of “Weird Vibes!”  For the duration of the music festival, the uber-awesome producer of “Weird Vibes” Shirley Braha and I hit the hottest concerts in Manhattan and Brooklyn in search of buzz and vibes and we got it!

Over the course of the week, I was fortunate enough to interview Mac Demarco, DIIV, Paul Banks (Interpol), Unicorn Kid, Kitty Pryde, and Blood Orange, and appearances by Flying Lotus, Pictureplane, Mykki Blanco, Merchandise, Thieves Like Us, Hot Sugar, Twerps, Madeline Follin of Cults, and Tao Lin!  Once again, it’s nearly too good to be true, but as you will see in the video, it’s all true.

Thanks again so much to all of the artists who agreed to be interviewed.

Thanks again to Shirley Braha for being an awesome partner in crime.

Thanks again to MTV Hive for an experience I will never forget.

Thank you, thank you, thank you!

And with no further delay, check out the World’s #1 Blogger episode of “Weird Vibes.”

CMJ – An Encounter with Pictureplane

Pictureplane and Geoffrey Dicker

I admit it!  The first time I saw Pictureplane perform, I wasn’t into it.  The sound in the venue was so loud that it basically made my ears bleed.  Coupled with the fact that he opened for Crystal Castles that night, whose shows are super rowdy (read: I am too old for that shit), the crowd was unruly from beginning to end.  Making matters worse, an enormous amount of baby powder was introduced into the crowd towards the end of the show (it was part of the performance) and I nearly passed out from it.  I pretty much wrote off Pictureplane from that moment.

Flash forward many months later and I got the opportunity to interview Travis Egedy aka Pictureplane for the CMJ episode of MTV’s Weird Vibes.  (Details on the episode to come soon, so stay tuned).  He was so cool to talk to and was great to interview.  He has a great sense of humor and after running into him several more times at CMJ, I am happy to report, instead of punching my lights out, he was always super friendly towards me.  🙂

I turned a new leaf and decided to check out his album “Thee Physical” and I am happy to report – I am a fan!  I definitely blame the sound in the venue for making everything sound so distorted because the album is a total fun dance party from start to finish.   To think I would have missed out on a lot of good music because of that night is distressing, but better late than never, I always say.  Check out Pictureplane’s Soundcloud page as there are a ton of free remixes!  I hope you become a fan!  Thanks again Pictureplane!

Pictureplane live at the Fillmore East

Travis Egedy - Pictureplane

On April 14, 2010, Travis Egedy aka Pictureplane took the stage to warm up the rowdy sold-out crowd for Crystal Castles at the Fillmore East in New York.  His music can be described as “dark synth pop.”  His stage show can be described as a deleted scene from “Eyes Wide Shut.”  After the first song, a woman in a white dress (later identified as “the librarian”) walked out on stage and started thumbing through a book.  She then started writing on some of the pages, tore them out, and threw them into the crowd.  Perhaps the ecstasy was kicking in by this point because the people in the front were clamoring to grab them as if they were unreleased pages of the manuscript from the “Twilight” series!

To make things even more bizarre, another man (later identified as “the alchemist”) walked out onto the stage and started emptying out bottles of baby powder on the stage and then took a whip and started whipping the baby powder into the air.  The next thing you knew, the entire room was engulfed in a cloud of baby powder.  The audience didn’t quite know how to react. As this was my first time seeing Pictureplane, I wasn’t sure if I should be enjoying myself or trying to figure out a way to send him my dry-cleaning bill.  After several minutes of this, the crowd was no longer amused.  When Pictureplane announced he was leaving the stage, thunderous applause were heard in the Fillmore East.  When the lights came back on, an obviously irritated road crew cleaned up the mess.
