Sad news!  New York artist, poet and former Warhol Superstar Taylor Mead has died at age 88.  Taylor was a great lover of art and you’d often see him in Downtown Manhattan supporting his friends and local artists.  He could also be spotted at the Bowery Poetry Club reciting verse. I can’t believe we won’t be seeing him around anymore, but his spirit will live on forever in New York.  RIP Taylor.

Museum of Modern Arthur by Joseph Arthur. Now showing at The Gershwin Hotel through June 30, 2011.

Joseph Arthur is an artist, musician and poet.  If you live in New York, June 2011 is your chance to get your Joseph Arthur fix.  The singer is performing a 10 night residency at The Living Room (from June 12 – 22) and his art is on display at The Gershwin Hotel for the entire month of June.  Stylistically, his paintings have a Picasso-meets-Basquiat feel to them and they are almost all pretty large in size.  Museum of Modern Arthur or MOMAR refers to an online exhibit Arthur had of his works from 2007-2009.

Rotating In A Rising World by Joseph Arthur

I really liked his paintings and as I read from the press release about the exhibit, the rest of the world does too!  Arthur has had close to 20 exhibits worldwide of his art.  I’ll be seeing Joseph Arthur perform next week at the Living Room and I am looking forward to telling him how much I enjoyed this exhibit.  The art is great and the presentation is great too.  As the art is displayed in a hotel, there’s art lining the lobby, the reception area as well as the lounge.

MOMAR by Joseph Arthur is on display at The Gershwin Hotel (located at 7 East 27th St. in New York) through June 30, 2011.  Don’t miss it!

It’s poet and writer Allen Ginsberg’s birthday today.  Unfortunately, I never got to meet him before his death in 1997, but I wrote him a letter requesting his autograph and he wrote me back!  That’s poetic justice!

Also born today: singer Curtis Mayfield, actor Tony Curtis, not out but gay news anchor Anderson Cooper and singer Josephine Baker.

Ugh!  Poet and musician Gil Scott-Heron has died. I saw him live in Central Park not even a year ago!  At the time, he was making a nice come back after spending years in jail for drugs.  He revealed that he had contracted HIV from his drug use, but it is uncertain what the actual cause of death was.  RIP, Gil!
