"Genius" by Nir Hod. Now showing at Paul Kasmin Gallery in New York through June 18, 2011
“Genius” by Israeli artist Nir Hod is just that. At first glance, you see beautiful portraits of children. As you do a little further examination, you notice one thing that is a little odd – the children are smoking cigarettes! The Paul Kasmin Gallery in New York, where “Genius” is currently on display, has the paintings hung in clusters so when you peruse the gallery, you feel as if you are in another age, where perhaps a Thomas Gainsborough painting would not feel out of place amongst the portraits.
Partial gallery view
Mixing sculpture with paintings, Nir Hod has created an exhibit that juxtaposes innocence and glamour with addiction and darkness. With each painting, you will find yourself wanting to know the back story of the characters Nir Hod has created. I recommend you carve out some time, let your imagination run wild and head over to Paul Kasmin Gallery(located at 293 Tenth Avenue in Manhattan). “Genius” by Nir Hod runs until June 18, 2011.
