Richard Butler leads quite a busy life.  When he is not out on tour with his band The Psychedelic Furs, he is an accomplished painter, whose 3rd solo exhibit “naturalhistory” opens at Freight + Volume in New York on March 20, 2015.

If you follow this site (and I thank you kindly for your patronage), you are familiar both with Richard’s music, as well as his first two exhibits “hypochondriacatthegrammercyparkhotel” and  “ahatfulofrain” (Click on the hyperlinks and they will open in a new window).

In “naturalhistory,” Richard Butler again draws inspiration from his family, most notably his daughter Maggie, who is pictured below.

You can see the progression in Richard’s work as his paintings have evolved from being dark and fetishistic to paintings of a much more contemplative nature in his quest to show the viewer the emotion that hides behind the facade.

I had a nice chat with Richard at the opening for “naturalhistory” and the moment was captured by the amazing photographer Derek Storm.  You can see photos from the opening night party on Derek’s website.  The link will open in a new window.  I encourage you to take a look around his site because coming from someone that sees and does a ton of stuff, Derek definitely finds himself at the right place and the right time a lot.  RESPECT!

New York!  Make sure you head over to Freight + Volume to check out a new collection of paintings entitled “ahatfulofrain” by Richard Butler.  Yes, the same Richard Butler of the band Psychedelic Furs!  Being a fan of his music and his paintings, it’s so exciting to see a new body of his works on canvas because it shows off  a completely different side of the artist and you will see just how prolific he is.

His paintings, all inspired by his daughter, have a quality of mystery and darkness to each work and like I did at his last exhibit, I stood in front of each painting and imagined a back story as to what went down before the moment was captured.  My imaginary stories differed, but recurring theme stood out and that is, the person in these paintings have been through some crazy stuff!

Create your own backstories at this really cool exhibit, which is on display though May 25, 2013.

I spoke with Richard Butler at the opening night reception and as always, he was a very nice guy.  His art really moves me and I was able to express that to him as well as asking him if all of these works were created since “hypochondriacatthegrammercyparkhotel” which exhibited in 2011.  He told me yes, that all of these paintings (and some more that are not on display in the exhibit) have been created in the last 2 years!  So impressive.  Even more impressive was that I asked him if he paints on the road. Psychedelic Furs have been playing a lot of shows in the last few years and he told me that it’s too difficult to bring the supplies on the road and create the art.  Obviously, his time management skills are impeccable and I have even more respect for him than I already did.  Thanks again Richard.  I love your art (both music and paintings) so much!  It was really great to talk with you.

Richard Butler, lead singer of Psychedelic Furs and an accomplished fine artist, who was born on, June 5.  Happy birthday!  I’ve had the pleasure of seeing him perform, viewing his art and meeting the man and I love all three sides to Richard Butler as all of them rock!

What’s your favorite Psychedelic Furs song?  Currently, I’ll say “Love my Way” “Heaven” and “India.”  It changes often as there are so many great songs to pick from.

The other night, I attended the opening night gala for Psychedelic Furs front man Richard Butler’s art exhibit “hypochondriacatthegrammercyparkhotel” at Freight + Volume in New York.  The tremendously talented artist was very cool when I met him.  I got to tell him what a big fan I am of his work and I congratulated him on the success of his exhibit.  He thanked me for my support. Pretty cool!  If you are in the New York area, you can see “hypochondriacatthegrammercyparkhotel” by Richard Butler showing at Freight + Volume in New York until March 26, 2011.  Freight + Volume is located at 530 West 24th Street.  Thanks again Richard!

When you read the headline and saw “Richard Butler,” I’ll bet you probably had the same reaction I initially had:  “Richard Butler is also the name of the lead singer of Psychedelic Furs.”  Guess what?  The lead singer of Psychedelic Furs is also an incredibly talented fine artist as well as being a hell of a rock star!  Freight + Volume in New York is showing an exhibit of Richard Butler’s paintings in an exhibit entitled “hypochondriacatthegrammercyparkhotel.”  Though his portraits look simple at a glance, upon further inspection, layers of mystery and darkness start to reveal themselves.

I was fortunate enough to attend the opening night gala reception and I had the chance to meet Richard Butler!   He was very nice and a photo of that experience will be coming soon.  For now, enjoy a couple more photos of amazing works from this incredibly talented artist!
