Lower Dens

Baltimore-based-band Lower Dens opened for Ra Ra Riot at Bowery Ballroom in New York on September 22, 2010. The band is gaining a great momentum by having positive buzz on lots of music sites.  When I saw them live, I enjoyed what I heard.  Their music has lots of guitar and lead singer Jana Hunter has a powerful voice.  I read that she used to work in a pizza parlor and quit her job to pursue a life of music.  That’s awesome!  Based on their performance, it looks like the only dough she’ll be rolling in is cold hard cash.  With song titles like “Dog’s Dick” and “Two Cocks,” there’s no way they won’t make it!  You can check out some free mp3s courtesy of Stereogum.  Good luck Lower Dens and thanks to Jana for handing me the setlist (which you can see after the jump) when the show was over!

Wes Miles (Lead Singer) of Ra Ra Riot and G

Moments (literally) after an awesome set at Manhattan’s Bowery Ballroom for their second of 3 sold out headlining shows on September 22, 2010, I met met lead singer Wes Miles of Ra Ra Riot.  I was just about to exit the venue when my razor sharp senses spotted Wes coming to talk to his family, who were in attendance tonight.  He was very gracious when I approached him and just moments earlier, he handed me the set list as he walked off stage.  Thanks Wes!  Ra Ra Riot’s new album “The Orchard” is out now.

Wes Miles of Ra Ra Riot

On September 22, 2010, Ra Ra Riot played their second of 3 sold out shows at Manhattan’s Bowery Ballroom.  If you don’t know their music, I’d compare it to what you could expect if Joy Division hired a string section as far as the instrumentation goes and vocally, lead singer Wes Miles sounds a bit like Kate Bush mixed with Jeff Buckley.  The band hails from Syracuse, New York and though it’s a mere 5 hour drive from the city, Ra Ra Riot thanked the crowd numerous times and mentioned how great it was to be playing for us.  I took a sneak peak at the set list from last night’s show and they changed it up a lot (please take note, bands that shall not be named that never switch things around).  They played 7 out of 10 songs off their latest album “The Orchard,” and the crowd loved every second of it.  Luckily, as I was in the front row, there were no ra-ra-riots.  Everyone danced politely in their own space and let the chamber pop sounds of Ra Ra Riot wash over us.  I met lead singer Wes Miles after the show and he was extremely nice.  More on that encounter coming soon.

See more pictures of Ra Ra Riot as well as the set list after the jump.
