Hot new band alert! Australia’s Jagwar Ma performed their first ever show in New York last night (actually, I think it was their first in the USA) at Mercury Lounge in Manhattan on September 30, 2013 and it was awesome! Their music is a mixture of rock, pop, shoegaze and electronica and the sold out crowd loved every second of it! They kept the lights low and flashing to provide the ultimate vibe, which was awesome for the show, but bad for taking photos (ha!), so you can see what the guys in Jagwar Ma look like after the jump when I spoke with them after the show. Their debut album is called “Howlin” and like their show, it mixes the genres I mentioned above. Their 45 minute set found them performing the majority of “Howlin” and it was great to hear songs like their chill out single “The Throw” and then moments later, hear a full on dance floor jam like “Four.” If you missed the show, they are playing at Glasslands in Brooklyn on October 1, 2013 and they’ve just announced a headlining US tour scheduled for winter 2013. If I were you, I’d definitely see them at a smaller venue because once you hear their music, you will fall in love.

I’ve been raving about the band Penguin Prison for months. Their music is guilt free pop perfection. Lead singer Chris Glover is a little bit rock and roll with a whole lot of soul. I am really looking forward to their debut album, which will hopefully be out in early 2011. To tide us all over until the release date, check out a video of Penguin Prison performing their soon-to-be hits “Animal Animal” and “A Funny Thing” live at Hiro Ballroom on September 29, 2010. Penguin Prison will be supporting another favorite of mine, Two Door Cinema Club on their fall tour, so don’t miss a night of great music when they come to your town!

Chris Glover of Penguin Prison
September 30, 2010 was my second time seeing Penguin Prison live and I loved them as much as I did the first time. The Brooklyn based band opened for Ellie Goulding at Hiro Ballroom and the sold out crowd loved them as well. Their music is perfect pop where every song will make you want to listen to it over and over again. Lead singer Chris Glover’s voice has a really nice blend of Justin Timberlake soul and he often does guitar solos where he plays the guitar over his head a’la Jimi Hendrix! In the studio, Penguin Prison has already remixed some of the hottest stars out there from Goldfrapp to Kylie Minogue and most recently they remixed the new Jamiroquai single.
When I saw Penguin Prison the first time, I had never heard any of their music as their debut record still has a TBA release date. Luckily for all of us, RCRD LBL has a bunch of free legal downloads and they’ve been on heavy rotation in the According2g offices for months now. When they played tracks such as “Something I’m Not,” “A Funny Thing,” and “The Worse It Gets,” I was singing along. I ran into Chris Glover after the show and he recognized me, which was pretty cool. If you missed Penguin Prison tonight, never fear, they are going to be playing with Two Door Cinema Club (another band I love) in October, so don’t miss that. I cannot wait to hear more great things from Penguin Prison.
