Hot new artist alert! British folk/soul singer Lianne La Havas brought her gorgeous and extremely talented self to New York’s Bowery Ballroom where she played a sold out show on September 11, 2012. The night kicked off with a set from fellow singer-songwriter and La Havas’ sometimes collaborator Willy Mason.
Willy’s set was a prelude of things to come as he told great stories in between songs and he made the 500 person capacity venue feel so intimate, it was like he was singing in your living room. Once Lianne hit the stage just around 9 pm, the thunderous applause she was met with sounded like a stadium and not a mid-sized venue.
Lianne’s voice is very powerful and she makes it look effortless as she belts out these notes that mere mortals such as myself could never hit in a million years. If you like the music of Adele, Emeli Sande or Alicia Keys, you’ll love Lianne La Havas. Her songs deal with love (“Is Your Love Big Enough”) and loss (“Gone”) and occasionally with falling in love with an older man (“Age”). She also covered “He Loves Me” by Jill Scott which also blew the roof off the venue. A video of “Is Your Love Big Enough,” the title track from Lianne’s debut album, will be coming soon so stay tuned.
Lianne thanked the crowd so many times for all the love in the room and I found myself grinning from ear to ear many times because there was so much love. I wish this kind of love could spread across the world, but that’s a discussion for another day. Before the concert was over, Lianne acknowledged the day of her performance – September 11. It’s a difficult day for the world, but especially New York, and Lianne mentioned that it was so great to see that New York has picked itself up and is able to enjoy itself again on such a heavy day. Lianne La Havas will be supporting John Legend on his upcoming tour, so there’s no doubt you’ll be hearing a lot more from Lianne. She’ll be hitting New York towards the end of October 2012, so do not miss her!
After the show, I spoke with Lianne and of course I asked her to expound on her experience with Prince. Find out what she said and also see the set list after the jump.
