My posts on Thom Yorke’s “new” band Atoms for Peace have been wildly successful. I’ve been getting a lot of requests via email to post more photos and as my faithful readers know, I aim to please. Superstar DJ Flying Lotus’ latest record “Cosmogramma” is set to be released on May 4, 2010. I have been lucky enough to receive a copy a full month before the CD is officially released, so I’d like to give you my thoughts.
Most of the songs on the record are in the one to two minute range and fuse the realms of thumping beats with spacey electronica that is sure to take your mind on a trip. The songs are mixed in a continuous sequence that speeds up and slows down to give you time to catch your breath before the next movement. A standout track on the album is “Do The Astral Plane” that has some jazzy elements and scatting in it mixed with luscious tribal beats. ”Table Tennis,” featuring Laura Darlington, samples the sounds of ping-pong balls being hit back and forth as Laura Darlington’s ethereal vocals play in the background. The track that will make this release the most sought after is the Thom Yorke (from Radiohead) collaboration “…And The World Laughs With You.” The track clocks in at 5 minutes and 27 seconds (which is delicious); however, Thom doesn’t make his first vocal appearance until the 2 minute and 45 second mark. Once he finally emerges, his unmistakable vocals make the phrases “I need to know you’re out there / I need to know you’re listening” sound like heaven. His trademark whispered vocals over him harmonizing with himself are also ever present, making this the standout track on the record. I don’t really think “Cosmogramma” captures the essence of FlyLo’s on stage presence, but still the record will definitely become a late night staple, according2g.

On April 5, 2010, Thom Yorke’s new band Atoms for Peace played their first concert in New York. My favorite song of the night was “Harrowdown Hill,” as it features the lyric “We think the same thing at the same time / We just can’t do anything about it / So don’t ask me, ask the ministry.” With that being said, I hope you enjoy this video of Thom jumping around the stage in that way that only he can. The sound quality is not the greatest, but what can ya do?
Until I hear otherwise, I am calling this song “Take Control,” which was world premiered by Thom Yorke on April 5, 2010 at New York’s Roseland Ballroom. Update: This song is being known as “Chris Hodges/Let Me Take Control” and also “A Walk Down the Staircase.” At any rate, here’s the video for this mysterious song. Someone bumped into me midway through the song so the video jumps in one part, but I think you can forgive that as you won’t hear this song anywhere else! On April 5, 2010, at 9:10 PM, Radiohead’s Thom Yorke debuted his new band Atoms for Peace in New York at the Roseland Ballroom. 3,500 devoted fans packed the house to see and hear what will go down as one of the best shows of 2010. Flying Lotus got the crowd warmed up with his funky tribal beats and took the stage around 8 pm. An hour and ten minutes later, Atoms for Peace ran through Yorke’s solo album “The Eraser,” and also played a few new songs including “Daily Mail” and the world premiere of a song possibly called “Take Control.” (A video of the full song is coming soon so stay tuned). The place went absolutely bonkers when Thom Yorke did a solo piano version of the Radiohead classic “Everything In It’s Right Place.” When I arrived at the venue, I stood next to Thom as he was walking into sound check and sadly, he would not pose for a photo with his favorite blogger G. He more than made up for it at the show as he played guitar, piano and danced like a man possessed across the stage, each time to thunderous applause. Atoms for Peace, which includes Flea from the Red Hot Chili Peppers, really added a new level of funk to the music of the often dark Thom Yorke. The show included about 3,000 straight guys with man crushes on Thom Yorke, at least that many people snapping photos and taking videos plus a laser lights show that rivaled that of Yorke’s “other” band Radiohead. It was amazing! I should also note that this show was a “paperless” ticket which means you had to use the credit card you purchased tickets with to gain entry into the venue. It prevented a lot of scalping and ran very smoothly. Hopefully more bands will go this route to allow the true fans a greater opportunity to get tickets.
